"The brutal and brazen murder of journalist Mauricio Cruz Solís is the first such deadly attack under the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum. The incident highlights the violence that Mexican journalism faces on a daily basis," said Jan-Albert Hootsen, representative of a press organization in Mexico.
The Michoacán state prosecutor's office (FGE) posted on social media on October 29 that it had opened an investigation.
Cruz, 25, is a news presenter for the radio station Radiorama Michoacán and founder of the news website Minuto x Minuto. He covers general news on politics and security.
An official said journalist protection agencies had not noted any threats against Cruz before the attack or given him any security.
