Snow White movie causes controversy

The movie Snow White has many bold innovations.

Continuing the “skin color revolution” that began with the dark-skinned mermaid version in the 2023 film The Little Mermaid, Disney introduced a dark-skinned version of Snow White in Snow White. Unfortunately, this change continues to be controversial among critics and the general public.

The “2025” version of Snow White is bold with the appearance of Snow White (played by Rachel Zegler) with dark skin, the character’s personality has many changes, creating a unique feature. Snow White is no longer a dreamy princess but has the stature of a leader. She knows how to create unity for the whole kingdom to end the rule of the evil queen (played by Gal Gadot).

The fact that the jealous queen played by Gal Gadot is more beautiful than Snow White was also compared by the online community to "tease" the movie.

Snow White's image in the new film represents fairness in society. Her appearance is not too outstanding compared to the common people. The film's message of independence and personal responsibility to contribute to the community is also a plus.

Instead of the prince, Snow White's lover is the leader of the bandits Jane Jonathan (played by Andrew Burnap), who lives a Robin Hood-style life and pursues a mission to fight against the queen. A romantic story that is close and easy for young audiences to relate to, plus the power transition at the end of the film is a significant revolution in content.

Rachel Zegler is one of Hollywood's rising young actresses with a series of roles in West Side Story, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Hunger Games... Her background as a singer with a beautiful voice helped her be chosen by director Marc Webb and Disney for the lead role in Snow White. Rachel Zegler's performance was highly appreciated and emotional. Unfortunately, this actress born in 2001 received strong reactions from the online community when she "slipped up her tongue" with many unnecessary things, for example, when answering an interview with Variety magazine, Zegler seemed to disrespect the classic 1937 animated film Snow White.

The mixed noise

Snow White's reinvention received mixed reviews. Surprisingly, the biggest criticism came against a beloved supporting character and one of Disney's most iconic characters over the decades: the seven dwarfs.

Director Marc Webb “animated” the 7 dwarfs using CGI technology and turned them into miners. But the dwarfs showed a lack of ideals in life, no one understood why they kept digging for diamonds. Writer Johnny Oleksinski from the New York Post (USA) commented: “The image of the 7 dwarfs looks more fake than the squirrels and birds playing in the forest, their jokes hardly bring laughter”.

In return, the music in the film received a lot of praise. Entertainment site Screenrant commented: "Songs like Whistle While You Work or Heigh-Ho are very catchy. Waiting on a Wish, sung by Snow White Zegler, is the best Disney tune since How Far I'll Go in the movie Moana."

In 2023, the innovations in The Little Mermaid caused a lot of controversy, but the box office revenue of more than 569 million USD "saved" the main character (actress Halle Bailey) and Disney suffered a clear loss. This "close call" history is unlikely to happen again with Snow White, because the film's first week revenue only reached 87.3 million USD worldwide, much lower than expected. The Hollywood Reporter commented that the film is unlikely to break even when the film's production cost is up to 270 million USD.
