Song Ha Yoon, Ji Soo, Kim Sae Ron cause the film crew to be in crisis because of their scandals.
Korean media reported that the film project History of Losers is facing a crisis due to the school violence scandal of the two main actors Jo Byeong Gyu and Song Ha Yoon.
Actors in trouble: New fate for filmmakers
This film was created after a lot of effort from the crew over a long period of time. It is known that the film was completed in August 2022, but until now it has not been able to air because the two main actors have been continuously involved in accusations of abusing classmates.
Previously, History of Losers struggled during filming due to news of lead actor Jo Byeong Gyu's school violence breaking out in 2021.
After efforts to regain his honor, Jo Byeong Gyu returned to the screen, the film project also showed signs of improvement after more than 2 years of postponement.
But now the film continues to face "misfortune" when the female lead Song Ha Yoon has just had evidence of abusing her classmates released and is being heavily criticized by Korean public opinion.
After the negative news about Song Ha Yoon broke out, the drama's screenwriter expressed his feelings on his personal page: "I'm really going crazy."
Many news sites believe that History of Losers will have two fates: accept the risk of a premiere, or have to replace the cast and re-film if the producer doesn't want the film to be abandoned.
History of Losers film project on the brink of "bankruptcy"
In fact, works facing crisis due to actors' moral issues are not rare cases in Korean showbiz. Previously, film crews had different solutions to reduce risks for the film.
Accept losing money, immediately eliminate actors
Two TV series, River Where the Moon Rises (2021) and Anonymous Driver 2 (2023), have chosen to cast new actors and re-shoot, despite the high cost involved. But this is a safe option, avoiding "one bad apple spoiling the barrel".
Na Eun even participated in promoting the movie before being involved in the school violence scandal.
Actress Na Eun (April) completed about 60% of filming with the crew of Hidden Driver 2, but it was all canceled due to ethical issues.
After the controversy, the crew decided to re-shoot the entire show and replace it with another actress to ensure the show was still broadcast on schedule.
Ji Soo's role (right) was transferred to Na In Woo.
Similarly, the crew of River Where the Moon Rises also removed Ji Soo from the male lead role even though he had completed 95% of the filming. The actor was also sued for causing financial loss. The main role was transferred to Na In Woo.
Broadcasting takes risks
It is correct and feasible to remove actors who are criticized for their noisy personal lives when the film is in the process of filming. But for projects that are completely completed and just waiting to be broadcast, the option of "destroying and rebuilding" seems impossible.
According to Yonhap News , the cost of producing TV dramas today has reached tens of billions of won, and the damage caused by one actor will affect the entire crew of dozens of people involved in the film project.
Yoo Ah In will still appear in the upcoming movie Goodbye Earth - Photo: Netflix
Among them is the Netflix series Goodbye Earth starring Yoo Ah In, which is set to be released on April 26 without any changes. The actor is on trial for using five banned substances, including propofol and ketamine.
A Netflix representative said: "Yoo Ah In appears as a character that connects the story in the film. In order to avoid disrupting the flow of the film as much as possible, the director, screenwriter, and production team all made efforts to discuss before re-editing and post-production."
Kim Sae Ron in Bloodhound - Photo: Netflix
Similar to Netflix's Bloodhound released last year starring Kim Sae Ron, who was convicted of driving while intoxicated.
At that time, the film crew was in a mess because Kim Sae Ron announced her withdrawal from the project even though the filming was almost complete. The screenwriter had to edit the entire ending, and the film crew temporarily stopped production for about a month with a lot of pressure and additional costs.
Therefore, the ending that the audience enjoyed on screen was not the original ending, which also caused the film to be criticized for having a rushed, unreasonable ending.
