The fact that a television documentary is widely shown in theaters is a pioneering step - marking an effort to innovate the way to reach the public, expanding the experience space for modern audiences, especially young audiences who rarely have the opportunity to access documentary films in a close, lively and engaging way.
Produced by TFS for nearly 2 years, “Overcoming the Waves” is a massive and dedicated documentary project of City Television. The film is like a slice of history and life, recreating 3 major stages in the development journey of Ho Chi Minh City: 1975–1985: Post-war period, rebuilding the city, overcoming numerous difficulties in economy , society and people's lives; 1986–1999: Doi Moi period - when the city began to transform, open up, attract investment, and reshape the urban appearance; 2000–2025: The period of strong integration, technological development, rapid urbanization and the city's people entering a new era.

Each episode is not only a historical documentary, but also a life-like story with real characters, real memories, and a sincere perspective on the profound changes that have shaped the diverse, dynamic, and ambitious city that it is today.
Unlike previous years, documentaries were mainly broadcast on television and rarely shown in theaters. The fact that “Vuot Song” was shown in theaters is a rather risky experiment, opening up a new space for documentary films – a genre that is considered “picky about viewers” when it comes to the place that is considered the place of entertainment films and blockbuster cinema.
The first two weeks of screenings have proven that. Audiences come to the cinema not only to watch, but also to live in the atmosphere of the past decades. Black and white documentary footage, stories told in the real voices of living witnesses, mixed with modern editing, sophisticated music … have brought an unexpected experience to many young people.
After each screening, the audience will also have the opportunity to interact directly with the production crew, director, screenwriter, cameraman, and researcher to share their journey of finding characters, restoring old materials, choosing storytelling methods, and maintaining the spirit of honesty - emotion - humanity.
With an open and sincere dialogue atmosphere, the exchanges become a lively space to approach history, arousing new emotions and awareness for the audience, especially the young generation who are finding their identity in the modern urban flow.
