Philippines, China respond to typhoon Bebinca

China's Ministry of Emergency Management said that from the night of September 15 to the morning of September 16, Typhoon Bebinca will make landfall along the coast from Taizhou in Zhejiang to Qidong in Jiangsu, causing heavy rain and gusty winds.

The Ministry of Water Resources has activated a level-four emergency response mechanism for flooding in Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui. Heavy rains from the approaching Typhoon Bebinca are expected to hit parts of southeastern China, the ministry said. Water levels in some medium and small rivers in the region are expected to exceed warning levels.

The agency stressed that prevention of floods in small and medium-sized rivers and flash floods in mountainous areas in the affected areas is to ensure the safety of people's lives and property. China has a four-tier flood control emergency response system, with level 1 being the most severe response level.

Earlier, Typhoon Bebinca hit the Philippines, killing at least six people and leaving two missing. Bebinca is the sixth typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, affecting more than 200,000 people in nearly 300 villages.

Nearly 14,000 people were evacuated to temporary shelters. The storm also caused extensive damage to the country's infrastructure. By the afternoon of September 14, Typhoon Bebinca had moved out of the Philippines but continued to bring heavy rains due to the strengthening of the southwest monsoon.

In Myanmar, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported on September 15 that floods following Typhoon Yagi have claimed the lives of 120 people and 89 are missing. In addition, more than 235,000 people have been left homeless as a result of Typhoon Yagi.
