Canada and the Philippines have announced that they are in the final stages of negotiating a new defense pact that will supersede all security, military and defense cooperation agreements that the two countries have signed since 2023. The new pact represents a new level and quality of bilateral cooperation in this particularly sensitive area. The three most closely watched new contents are the agreement that each side's military will be stationed on the other's territory on a rotational basis, the two countries will hold bilateral and multilateral joint exercises, and conduct joint military activities in the region.
This defense treaty, neither in name nor in substance, is a military alliance between the two countries, but it creates a level and form of association and cooperation between two distant partners and helps overcome the large geographical distance between Canada and the Philippines.
Since taking office, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has built a network of bilateral and multilateral military, defense and military cooperation with many partners outside the Southeast Asian region such as the United States, France, Australia, Japan and Canada.
