The "starting shot" in this state is the first test for former President Donald Trump's re-election effort.

According to Edison Research, a company that conducts public opinion polls and collects election results in the US, Mr. Trump is predicted to defeat his opponents to win the Republican race in this state.

The Republican Party's caucus to nominate a presidential candidate for the party began at around 7:00 p.m. local time on January 15 (8:00 a.m. January 16 - Vietnam time), in cold weather conditions with temperatures in some places dropping to minus 42°C.

Voters went to 1,600 caucuses to cast their ballots for the Republican presidential candidate.

Mr. Trump's two main opponents are Ms. Nikki Haley - former US Ambassador to the United Nations and former governor of South Carolina and Mr. Ron DeSantis - Governor of Florida.

According to an update from NBC News, as of this writing, with about 85% of the votes counted, Mr. Trump is currently leading with nearly 51% of the votes. Following him are Mr. Ron DeSantis (about 21.3%) and Ms. Nikki Haley (about 19.1%).

Trump is expected to beat his rivals to win a landslide victory in the Republican race in Iowa, Edison Research said.

Former President Trump is currently facing a series of federal and state court charges related to the 2020 election, mishandling classified documents and paying a “hush money” to a porn star.

He is the first former US president to face criminal charges and has been indicted in four separate cases. He is scheduled to appear in US federal court in March 2024 in connection with a lawsuit accusing him of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

According to Reuters , Mr. Trump's victory in Iowa will contribute to his lead in public polls of Republican candidates.

In addition, Mr. Trump's overwhelming victory in Iowa will strengthen his argument that he is the only Republican candidate capable of competing with President Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate, despite criminal charges.

The Democratic Party has changed its primary election schedule, so that the party's primary voting will take place first in states with cultural and population diversity, before moving on to Iowa.

Additionally, this year's Iowa caucuses are being switched to mail-in or online voting, with the Iowa Democratic primary results to be announced in March 2024.
