US President Donald Trump's announcement that the US will annex Greenland has Danish officials warning of war.
During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on March 13, President Trump said the US would annex Greenland. "I think it will happen," Trump said when asked about the possibility of annexation, according to Politico .

The president then said that “the United States needs Greenland for international security” and was confident that Mr Rutte would play a “constructive” role on the issue. “Denmark is very far away,” Mr Trump said, adding that Copenhagen would not be in a position to defend the territory.
In response, Secretary General Rutte said he did not want to drag NATO into the discussion but acknowledged that Greenland was important for Arctic security amid the interests of rival powers.

The chairman of the Danish Parliament's Defense Committee, Rasmus Jarlov, later posted a response on social network X. "We do not appreciate the NATO Secretary General joking with Mr. Trump about Greenland like that. That means war between two NATO countries. Greenland just voted against independence from Denmark and does not want to become part of the United States," Mr. Jarlov wrote.
In Greenland’s legislative elections that ended this week, the opposition Democratic Party won 30 percent of the vote. The party supports a gradual path to independence for Greenland through economic development. However, party leader Jens Frederik Nielsen and the Democratic Party have insisted that Greenland is not for sale and have rejected the idea of becoming part of the United States.
"Mr. Trump's statement from the US is inappropriate and shows once again that in situations like these, we must stand together," Mr. Nielsen wrote on social media.
Greenland's government leader Mute Egede also responded immediately to Trump's comments on the same day, declaring that enough was enough and calling on party leaders in the territory to meet to strengthen their opposition.
