"After many years of investing and doing business in Vietnam, I realize that now is the best opportunity for overseas Vietnamese to return to do business in Vietnam," said Mr. Johnathan Hanh Nguyen, Chairman of the Imex Pan Pacific Group, an overseas Vietnamese in the Philippines, at the 4th Conference of Overseas Vietnamese and the Forum of Vietnamese Knowledge and Experts Abroad on the morning of August 22.
As an overseas Vietnamese who has made many contributions to the development of the country, Mr. Johnathan Hanh Nguyen commented: Over the past time, with a strategic vision, the Government has continuously improved and issued new policies, especially in the fields of investment, economy, education and science and technology.
Knowledge transfer from abroad to Vietnam
Also sharing at the Conference, he said he was happy that recently many young people from abroad have returned to Vietnam to start a business, including those born abroad.
"This proves that there is a significant shift of knowledge from abroad to Vietnam, especially from countries with developed technology and economies," he emphasized.
According to him, to further attract this potential resource, the government should have a strategy to encourage overseas Vietnamese students and young people to intern, start businesses, and participate in community projects in Vietnam to help them connect with their roots and bring new initiatives, contributing to the country's development.
Accordingly, Mr. Johnathan Hanh Nguyen suggested that the Government should apply a sandbox mechanism, allowing testing of new technologies and new business models without requiring many licenses. In addition, it is necessary to create more favorable conditions for young overseas Vietnamese to apply for Vietnamese nationality while still retaining their foreign nationality, making ID cards, etc.
On the other hand, he also made proposals to further improve the investment environment in Vietnam, including considering a one-stop mechanism specifically for overseas Vietnamese, where information, advice and quick resolution of legal issues related to investment can be provided.
Developing regional innovation hubs
Vietnam has made clear progress in promoting digital transformation, but it is necessary to plan "technology clusters" with modern digital infrastructure, located in major cities and key economic regions, where businesses and technology startups can interact, share knowledge and collaborate on research.
In that context, Mr. Johnathan Hanh Nguyen said that there should be more special incentive mechanisms for national data infrastructure projects, AI development, semiconductors, and promoting high-quality human resource training programs.
“We should have special mechanisms to promote technology incubators and venture capital because they are key components of the innovation ecosystem that facilitate innovators in creating new technologies and commercializing those technology products,” he said.
On the other hand, according to this businessman, Vietnam also needs to have support mechanisms to connect overseas Vietnamese retail stores to display and sell Vietnamese products, in order to enhance the position of Vietnamese brands in the international market...
More than 400 overseas Vietnamese are attending the 4th Conference of Overseas Vietnamese around the world and the Forum of Overseas Vietnamese Intellectuals and Experts on August 22 in Hanoi.
The forum will be an opportunity for overseas experts and intellectuals to exchange information on development trends in the world and the region; give advice on green and sustainable development issues of the country; expand the Innovation Network, etc.
In addition, within the framework of the 4th Conference, there are 4 thematic sessions taking place in parallel this afternoon, including "Overseas Vietnamese and the development of high technology in Vietnam", "Overseas Vietnamese businesses and entrepreneurs accompanying the country", "Great national unity, association work and the role of the young generation of overseas Vietnamese", "Overseas Vietnamese - Ambassadors of Vietnamese culture and language".
