Leaving the peaceful countryside of Hoa Khanh Dong commune, Duc Hoa district, Long An province, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Duyen chose Ho Chi Minh City as her place to start a career. As a media and press editor, the young girl gradually asserted her mettle and passion amidst the dynamic pace of life in the city.
As a member of the Gen Z generation, Ms. Duyen finds that Ho Chi Minh City offers many advantages such as wide career opportunities; increased experience, broadened thinking, and increased independence and maturity.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Duyen (Hoa Khanh Dong commune, Duc Hoa district) is in charge of editing the program Spring in Ho Chi Minh City broadcast on Ho Chi Minh City Television in early 2025.
However, starting a career in the city also comes with many difficulties such as high living costs, competitive pressures at work and homesickness.
"On average, every month, I have to spend nearly 50% of my income on basic needs and take care of everything from big to small. Sometimes I feel sorry for myself because when I am sick, my family is not by my side," said Ms. Duyen.
To overcome these difficulties, the young woman learned how to plan her spending wisely, take advantage of opportunities for personal development and always maintain an optimistic spirit. "Although there are challenges at times, I believe that each experience helps me become "stronger" on my career journey. In the context of a volatile labor market, I try to improve my capacity to adapt because Ho Chi Minh City is a place where many talents gather, if you do not continuously learn, it is easy to fall behind" - Ms. Duyen confided.
Besides her main job, Ms. Duyen also spends time studying and improving her skills by participating in IELTS and marketing courses to expand her knowledge and apply it to her work.
Thanks to her constant efforts, she has participated in the production team of many meaningful television programs such as Spring in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnamese Face, The TV Face and edited special publications such as Touching the Mind, White Blouse Courage.
Sharing about her future plans, Ms. Duyen said she will continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle and study for a second degree or master's degree to improve her expertise. "I believe that good health, both physically and mentally, will help me work more effectively and have enough energy to pursue my passion," Ms. Duyen said.
Unlike many young people, Ms. Nguyen Yen Nhi (An Thanh commune, Ben Luc district) decided to leave the city to return to her hometown to live and work because she wanted to spend more time taking care of her family. She currently works as an office worker for a plastic company.
The decision to return to her hometown to start a career was not easy, especially when she was at an age when many of her peers were passionate about conquering the peak of their careers in big cities. However, Nhi realized that although working in big cities offers attractive career opportunities and a dynamic life, it also comes with pressures that not everyone can handle.
"I like to be close to my parents, have warm family meals, take care of the garden with them, and chat after stressful working hours, so I want to find a job near home. Moreover, I see that my hometown is on the rise with many new job opportunities and potential investment projects, so I am more confident in my decision," Nhi confided.
According to her, choosing to work in the countryside also has many other advantages such as a lower standard of living than in the city, fresh air, less traffic jams and savings on rent.
Ms. Nguyen Yen Nhi (An Thanh commune, Ben Luc district) decided to "leave the city and return to the countryside" and take on the position of office worker for a plastic company.
However, she also faced certain difficulties. "When choosing to return to my hometown, I also had to accept that there were not many job opportunities, low benefits, and fewer ways to entertain, take care of health, eat, etc. than in big cities. Working in my hometown brings a good income compared to the general level, but the workload is quite a lot," said Nhi.
To overcome these challenges, the young woman tries to improve her skills, learn more knowledge and seek opportunities for self-development. She regularly attends workshops on job opportunities and learns English and Chinese to improve her skills.
In the near future, Ms. Nhi plans to improve her office skills and learn more about other fields to diversify her work related to the industry she is pursuing.
Bustling cities or peaceful countrysides both bring their own opportunities and challenges. Before deciding on a suitable “destination”, young people need to clearly define their goals, prepare a solid foundation and constantly strive to build a bright future./.
