Accomplices of defendant Mau include: Nguyen Sy Duc (59 years old), Nguyen Dinh Tuan (51 years old), Dau Thi Tuyet (48 years old), Phan Thi Loan (45 years old), Le Thi Hong (42 years old), all residing in Do Luong district; Nguyen Xuan Dung (53 years old, residing in Quang Ninh province), Nguyen Dinh Dung (39 years old, residing in Bac Giang province); Phan Thi Thu Hien (51 years old), Cu Hoang Hung (48 years old, all residing in Hanoi city) and Le Ngoc Tuyen (37 years old, residing in Hai Phong city).
According to the authorities' accusations, Tran Thi Mau played the role of leader of this drug ring.
The transnational drug ring run by Mau was formed in early 2021. Mau's drug suppliers were two Laotians whose specific origins were unknown.
When a customer orders drugs, Mau contacts the Laotians and agrees on a price. The Laotians send their underlings to carry the drugs, cross the border, cut through the forest and gather them at a location. Mau will hire someone to pick up the goods and transport them deep into the interior before delivering them to the customer.
During the questioning and public debate at the trial, the first-instance trial panel clarified that within nearly a year, Mau had directed his henchmen to carry out 4 illegal drug trafficking cases, with a total weight of more than 105kg, including nearly 93kg of crystal meth, 8.3kg of heroin and more than 3.8kg of synthetic drugs.
Mau spent billions of dong in profits from buying drugs on gambling to satisfy his gambling addiction.
The remaining defendants in the ring, depending on their positions and roles, participated in the illegal trading of from 1kg to 90kg of various types of drugs.
The two defendants Phan Thi Thu Hien and Le Ngoc Tuyen were proposed to be sentenced to life in prison.
Arguing at the trial, the defendants said they were aware of their crimes, expressed remorse, and wished to receive leniency from the law so they could have a chance to live, a chance to return soon to take care of their elderly parents, and raise their children.
Due to the complexity of the case, the Trial Panel decided to extend the deliberation period. The case will be announced on January 22.
