On the evening of January 29, the artists who are students of the artist couple Hoai Thanh - Do Quyen gathered to celebrate the New Year and also the teacher's birthday. "Artist Hoai Thanh was born on January 27, but because the students were busy with rehearsals, the gathering was postponed until January 29. The happiest thing was the participation of artist Ngoc Giau" - artist Do Quyen said.

Know each other from the amateur band

After more than 30 years of living together, when talking about her happy home, artist Do Quyen smiled brightly: "Mr. Hoai Thanh is truly a great spiritual support in my life. We fell in love in 1970. At that time, we were both participating in the Phung Hao amateur troupe led by Mrs. Bay - People's Artist Phung Ha. I was paired with him by my artist friends and on a rainy afternoon, he took me home and from then on we fell in love.

Mr. Hoai Thanh once said something that I always remember: "Though the storms and rains are heavy, we will still be together." But then the storms of the singing profession pushed us in two directions. Mr. Hoai Thanh left Saigon to join a singing troupe in the central region, and I stayed in Saigon. After more than 10 years of separation, in 1980, we met again and only then did we realize that we could not live without each other.

I still remember that Mrs. Bay Phung Ha always told us: "You guys met each other at my Cai Luong Tai Tu Group. Your whole life will be tied to Cai Luong, so no matter how hard the singing career is, don't give up the stage and don't give up the job of passing on the profession to the younger generation."

And the year-end party of artists Hoai Thanh - Do Quyen with the actors of class K16 of Ho Chi Minh City College of Theater and Cinema (now Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema) had many more beautiful memories of the teacher-student relationship.

Artist Hoai Thanh continued his wife's words: "We just hope that our students have the faith to stick with the stage. I will always be their support."

New direction of descendants

During the reunion, People's Artist Ngoc Giau went on stage to congratulate the happiness of the two artists Hoai Thanh - Do Quyen. She and the artist couple's son sang two songs for the audience: "Tra no tinh xa" (Tuan Khanh) and "Den khuat" (Lam Phuong).

She said that in an artist's life, having a child to follow in his footsteps is a blessing. Although Hoai Anh Kiet turned to become a professional singer, the new direction of Hoai Thanh's descendants - Do Quyen after the "Sao noi ngoi" contest has created many beautiful impressions.

She mentioned the Bong Lua amateur music club located on Truong Dinh Street, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, where Hoai Thanh - Do Quyen once organized a small stage for young actors to perform famous excerpts of the past such as: "Half a Life of Fragrance", "Bui Thi Xuan", "Trieu Thi Trinh", "Tieng Trong Me Linh", "Vo va tinh"... There were about 15 young actors, 6 musicians, they always considered this stage as the second home in their life of loving art.

"When he was alive, Professor Tran Van Khe came to see the students of Hoai Thanh and Do Quyen perform twice. He praised the teaching methods of both. Especially, he agreed with the meaning of creating a place for young actors who had just graduated from school to show their talents.

Today, in this meeting, there are students who are now famous such as: Meritorious Artist Le Tu, artist Ha Nhu, Meritorious Artist Thy Trang, artist Thy Phuong, Thy Nhung... all are students of Hoai Thanh - Do Quyen, I am very happy for the training results of both" - People's Artist Ngoc Giau shared.

Hoai Thanh was always Do Quyen's support. Sometimes he and his wife prepared lesson plans and guided the actors in performing movements on stage. They always worked together, even though the stage had made their lives difficult many times.

We asked artists Hoai Thanh - Do Quyen: "Over the past years, the cai luong stage has encountered many difficulties, but you still stick with the stage. Not only do you teach students in the country but you also pass on your skills to young people in Australia. Do you think about the main goals that contribute to keeping the cai luong stage always lit?"

Artist Hoai Thanh replied: "I welcome the goal of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association and HTV, which is a strategy to help revive the reformed theater through many forms of performance organization. However, I hope that there will be more programs to preserve reformed theater such as bringing theater into schools, organizing performances for foreign tourists... At the same time, it will open up a development direction for young actors, to help them develop their talents."

Artist Do Quyen said that after she graduated from the stage directing class with the play "Manh doi phan nhan" (author Nguyen Dinh Chinh - adapted by Do Quyen), she hopes to have many opportunities to return to the country to stage contemporary-themed cai luong plays for her students to perform.
