DTO - According to forecasts, this year's dry season, drought and saltwater intrusion will be severe, directly affecting agricultural production, especially fruit orchards. In Chau Thanh district, where there is a large area of durian orchards, a tree with high economic value, durian is very sensitive to saline water sources. Therefore, gardeners are very concerned about the situation of saltwater intrusion to have a response plan to protect specialty fruit orchards.
Farmers in Chau Thanh district choose to grow durian because of its high economic value.
Currently, many durian gardeners in Chau Thanh district are dredging and cleaning garden ditches to provide nutrients for durian trees and to reserve irrigation water during the dry season. Mr. Nguyen Hung Cuong - a gardener in Phu Huu commune, Chau Thanh district, said: "This year, hearing about saltwater intrusion deep into the delta, I took the opportunity to dredge ditches to retain water. In case of saltwater intrusion, I will take water from garden ditches to irrigate, ensuring that the trees will not be damaged."
Along with proactively providing irrigation water during the dry season, gardeners equip themselves with salinity meters to check the quality of water sources as well as prepare appropriate garden irrigation plans according to each growth stage of the tree. Mr. Doan Thanh Liem, residing in Phu Huu commune, said: "Currently, most durian growers buy salinity meters regularly every day, when the water level is about half the river, they start measuring for irrigation."
Durian gardeners equipped with salinity meters
In addition, Chau Thanh District People's Committee also equipped salinity meters for the Department of Agriculture and Environment, communes and towns to measure, check and update the salinity of water sources daily, promptly informing gardeners to have appropriate response measures. "For now, we only recommend that people monitor the progress of salinity to store water for irrigation, recommend that people change to more scientific and advanced irrigation methods, save water, reduce costs, and save resources" - Vice Chairman of Chau Thanh District People's Committee Phan Thanh Dung, shared.
Currently, Chau Thanh district has more than 1,700 hectares of durian gardens, a crop with high economic efficiency. Therefore, proactive response from local people and authorities is very necessary for durian trees to develop sustainably in Chau Thanh.
