Farmers of Dien Bien Phu City compete in production and business excellence

After getting married, Mr. Duong Dinh Tam (born in 1974), group 2, Tan Thanh ward (Dien Bien Phu city) started to build his economy but encountered many difficulties in capital. With support from the Party Committee, local government, and mass organizations, he boldly opened a motorbike spare parts store. In 2012, he bought land in Thanh Nua commune to develop a fruit tree growing model. Mr. Tam said: “There is no land fund in the ward to do a model of growing crops and raising livestock, so I went to buy land in the suburbs. Initially, I only bought ^an area of 6,000m2 to grow jackfruit, grapefruit, and oranges. After seeing the model develop well, I expanded the area to more than 3ha and planted many other types of fruit trees. Not only did I visit and learn from many models in and outside the province, I also participated in training courses and technology transfer organized by the Farmers' Association. In 2022, I will continue to invest in planting 20 hectares of macadamia in Thanh Minh commune."

Currently, along with the motorbike spare parts business, Mr. Tam's family has more than 3 hectares of fruit trees (jackfruit, grapefruit, orange, apple), cardamom and raises 200 chickens, 10 breeding pigs, bringing in an income of more than 1 billion VND/year. The model creates stable jobs for 8 workers with a salary of 6 million VND/person/month and hundreds of seasonal workers with a salary of 250,000 - 300,000 VND/person/day. For many years, Mr. Tam has been recognized as a good farmer and business household in the city and province.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc, Chairwoman of the Tan Thanh Ward Farmers' Association, said: The Ward Farmers' Association has 660 members, operating in 10 branches. Most members do business and trade at home, some members develop farms but live outside the ward because they do not have land to invest. In recent years, the Ward Farmers' Association has promoted and mobilized farmer members to participate in production and business, thereby creating typical economic development models, such as members Duong Dinh Tam, Hoang Van Dung, Nguyen Ngoc Toan, Nguyen Van Ho, Phung Van Tien, Tran Ngoc Duong, Dang Thi Nhan... with incomes from 300 million VND to 1 billion VND/year, creating jobs for many other workers. The whole association has 8 households achieving excellent production and business at the provincial level, 12 households achieving the city level, and 12 households at the grassroots level.

Identifying the movement of farmers competing in good production and business as the focus, the Farmers' Association of Dien Bien Phu City at all levels has actively promoted and organized for members to register for good production and business households at all levels according to criteria; coordinated in technology transfer. In addition, conferences were held to summarize, evaluate and replicate advanced models; and visits to study effective models to apply in local production and business. Thanks to that, the movement has increasingly spread and spread widely in many fields of business, cultivation, animal husbandry, small-scale industry and services; creating motivation and encouragement for members to enthusiastically compete in production, creating conditions for members to exchange experiences, good practices, effective models, and help each other get rich legitimately. The whole city has 346 households achieving good production and business at all levels; of which, 13 households at the central level, 31 households at the provincial level, 116 households at the city level, and 186 households at the grassroots level.

From the movement of good production and business, typical advanced collectives and individuals have emerged. Gold member A Chau, Na Pen village, Na Nhan commune with a fish farming model, area of 1ha, income of 200 - 250 million VND/year. Member Dang Cong Tien, Huoi Pha village, Him Lam ward with a clean pig farming model according to VietGAP standards, income of 350 - 450 million VND/year, creating stable jobs for 4 - 5 workers, income level of 4 - 7 million VND/person/month...

Mr. Do Thanh Cong, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dien Bien Phu City, said: The movement "Farmers compete in production, good business, unite to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty" has created a driving force for farmers to actively transform the agricultural production structure, gradually link up in the value chain, promote the development of large-scale commodity agriculture; contribute to creating solidarity, mutual love, mutual assistance to help each other eliminate hunger, reduce poverty, maintain political stability, social order and safety in the area. In the coming time, the Association will continue to launch and improve the quality of the emulation movement, mobilize farmer members to promote the strengths, conditions, and available potential of each commune and ward to develop household economy...
