Start-up growing gerbera daisies using high technology
Mr. Bui Van Kha - Director of Dong Thap Flower Cooperative, Dan Phuong Commune, Hanoi City is a typical example of a successful start-up farmer, applying digital transformation effectively in agricultural production. Currently, Dong Thap Flower Cooperative, of which Mr. Bui Van Kha is the Director, is one of the largest gerbera growing areas in the capital.
Mr. Kha excitedly said: In early 2023, the gerbera flower product of Dong Thap Cooperative was certified as a 3-star OCOP product. The gerbera flower of the Cooperative has initially built a brand, so all of the flower products of the Cooperative are consumed and purchased by traders, and households do not have to worry about output.

As the first person to bring flower growing to rice fields in Dong Thap commune, Mr. Kha said: Married to a woman from Tay Tuu flower land (Bac Tu Liem), in 2000, realizing that flower farmers here had high income, Mr. Kha brought flowers to plant on rice fields in Dong Thap commune. Initially, Mr. Kha planted many different types of flowers such as chrysanthemums, roses, gerberas... Realizing that gerberas were especially suitable for the land of Dong Thap commune, favored by customers, and had a high selling price, since 2003, Mr. Kha switched to specializing in this flower variety.
After 7 years of growing gerbera daisies, accumulating some capital and experience, in 2010, Mr. Kha was also the first person in Dong Thap commune to invest in a sturdy greenhouse system covered with nylon to grow gerbera daisies. Thanks to the methodical investment, Mr. Kha's gerbera daisies model in the greenhouse gave much higher productivity and quality. From there, he gradually expanded the model.
From a few initial flower fields, Mr. Kha now has 1.5 hectares of gerbera daisies grown in rotation in a greenhouse. Thanks to that, Mr. Kha has flowers to harvest every day.
Mr. Kha shared: During the process of starting a business, I received companionship and support from all levels of the Farmers' Association in terms of preferential loans, scientific and technical training, guidance on establishing cooperatives as well as building the gerbera brand.

Accordingly, in 2020, with the support and guidance of the Farmers' Association, Mr. Kha linked up with other farming households to establish Dong Thap Flower Cooperative in Dong Thap commune, Dan Phuong district, Hanoi with a cultivation area of more than 20 hectares, supporting each other in production and consumption.
"In the coming time, Dong Thap Flower Cooperative will continue to coordinate with the Farmers' Association to open science and technology training courses, promote the application of digital transformation, and set the goal of continuing to maintain the quality of 3-star OCOP products with gerbera flowers, while continuing to upgrade to 4-star OCOP products" - Mr. Bui Van Kha - Director of Dong Thap Flower Cooperative said.
Many typical examples of Hanoi billionaire farmers starting creative businesses
Along with Director of Dong Thap Flower Cooperative Bui Van Kha, Hanoi Farmers' Association also has many innovative start-up farmers with technical innovations applied to production, earning billions of dong in profits, such as farmer Ta Dinh Huy in Thuong Vuc commune, Chuong My district, who won the Farmers' Scientist award with his invention of a "23 in 1" unmanned smart agricultural machine.
Or the example of farmer Phan Thi Thuan, Phung Xa commune, My Duc district, with her research on making lotus silk thread and weaving lotus silk, contributing to the restoration of the traditional silk weaving village. Meanwhile, Ms. Dang Thi Cuoi in Dan Phuong commune, Dan Phuong district, applying high technology to agricultural production is one of the bright spots of agriculture in the 4.0 era.

Or like Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, Dan Hoa commune, Thanh Oai district, with a model of growing, producing and processing cordyceps mushrooms using microbial culture technology combined with modern agricultural machinery and equipment, the revenue is more than 40 billion VND per year.
Support members to participate in digital transformation and develop OCOP products
Ms. Pham Hai Hoa - Chairman of Hanoi Farmers' Association said: By December 2023, Hanoi City had 285 high-tech agricultural production models concentrated in the districts of Me Linh, Gia Lam, Thuong Tin, Dong Anh, Thanh Oai, Dan Phuong... The value of high-tech agricultural products (in 2022) is estimated to account for about 40% of the total agricultural production value of the whole City.
The One Commune One Product (OCOP) program has achieved remarkable results; to date, Hanoi has 2,167 OCOP products of 3 stars or higher, in which farmer members are the owners of many OCOP products.
To achieve the above positive results, in recent times, the Hanoi Farmers' Association has had many measures and methods to promote communication about the goals and significance of the OCOP program through branch activities, association groups, farmer clubs, conferences, seminars, training, and communication channels from the city to the grassroots.
The Association has directed the implementation of the movement of farmers competing in production and business, uniting to help each other get rich and reduce poverty sustainably. In particular, focusing on guiding, propagating, and mobilizing farmers to produce safely associated with typical products and OCOP products.
Farmers' Associations at all levels have also actively encouraged households to expand their production and business scale according to the farm and family farm model; build branches, professional associations and new collective economic models and cooperatives. At the same time, support members to borrow capital from the Hanoi Farmers' Support Fund to invest in production development, aiming to develop diverse OCOP products according to advantages.
Ms. Pham Hai Hoa - Chairman of Hanoi Farmers' Association said: 2 out of 16 targets set by Hanoi Farmers' Association in 2024 are developing OCOP products, linking production and digital transformation.
Specifically: Each district and town association strives to propagate and mobilize farmers to register to develop at least 1 agricultural product to participate in the OCOP program and build product brands; directly coordinate and guide the establishment of at least 1 chain linking production and consumption of agricultural products.
Each district and town must build and deploy at least one initiative model "Each farmer is a trader, each cooperative is a digital technology application enterprise" to support digital transformation for farmers according to Decision No. 4098 of the Hanoi People's Committee approving the Hanoi City Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030.
Workshop to provide feedback on the handbook "Raising awareness of community development, creative startups, digital transformation in agricultural production and the role of the Association in implementing the OCOP program". According to the leader of the Hanoi Farmers' Association, despite achieving many positive results, the activities to support farmers in starting businesses, digital transformation and building OCOP products by Hanoi Farmers' Association members in particular and the whole country in general have not yet created a movement, are not clear, are not highly effective, and resources have not been focused on investment.
The Chairman of the Hanoi Farmers' Association said: Participating in the project "Improving awareness and capacity for officials and farmer members on creative startups, digital transformation, actively participating in the OCOP program at the local level" proposed by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association and signed by the United Nations Development Program, the Global Environment Facility's small project funding program is a very good opportunity for the Hanoi Farmers' Association to support farmer members as well as well implement the targets set for 2024.
"The Hanoi Farmers' Association believes that the handbook "Raising awareness of community development, creative startups, digital transformation in agricultural production and the role of the Farmers' Association in implementing the OCOP program" after being completed and put into use will be a very valuable and practical document repository for cadres and farmer members of Hanoi in particular and cadres and farmer members nationwide in general" - said the Chairman of the Hanoi Farmers' Association.
The project "Improving awareness and capacity for officials and farmer members on creative startups, digital transformation, and active participation in the OCOP program at the local level" proposed by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union has been signed by the United Nations Development Program, the Global Environment Facility's small project funding program (to be implemented for 18 months from May 2022).
