On September 27, in Ninh Binh, the Ministry of Information and Communications organized a training program on communication skills about heritage in the digital age.

Multi-platform journalism must understand the public

In his opening speech, Mr. Trieu Minh Long, Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Information and Communications) said that the development of new technologies in the 4.0 industrial revolution has strongly impacted the communication methods of traditional press agencies. In particular, communication about heritage always needs to consider and choose methods to make the content and form of communication more effective.

As the Standing Committee of the Information Subcommittee under the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, the Ministry of Information and Communications organizes this training course to provide additional solutions and communication skills on heritage; strengthen connections with press agencies to promote Vietnam's UNESCO heritages and take advantage of technology in press and communication work.

"I believe that the training program will exchange useful heritage communication skills, serving journalists and reporters during their work," Mr. Trieu Minh Long emphasized.

At the training session, Mr. Vu The Cuong, lecturer at the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics - a person with a lot of experience in the field of multimedia journalism, shared about the trend of multi-platform journalism.

Mr. Cuong believes that the press can confidently surpass information on social networks because the information is verified and constructive. However, to compete with social networks, it is necessary to develop both content and form in parallel, in which content is king and presentation is queen.

In addition, Mr. Vu The Cuong expressed his opinion that journalists today are not afraid of changing themselves, constantly updating new things. We must ask whether our products have reached the public or not? How do the public receive our products?

“Multi-platform journalism is about answering two questions: do we reach the public and how? The ultimate goal of modern journalism is how to reach the largest audience.”

At the same time, Mr. Cuong also said that it is necessary to see how our public trends are changing on Face and Zalo? From there, we can provide information on appropriate platforms.

Mr. Vu The Cuong noted that the content must be correct, accurate, and fast. At the same time, he asked, how are press agencies actually "operating" on the platform? Where is our public? Multi-platform press must know where the public is? That is, the press must go in the right direction to reach the public.

Mr. Cuong affirmed: "Multi-platform press must understand the public, forecast the public, and growth rate to build strategies, gain views, and promote its brand."

Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the mindset of journalists, the way of doing journalism, and take advantage of technology. In particular, Mr. Cuong believes that Podcast is the future of journalism, if we are slow, there will be other competitors.

In his sharing, Mr. Vu The Cuong also said that Longform is the rise of “print newspapers” in electronic newspapers. Thanks to technology, Longform gradually asserts its throne. Therefore, it is necessary to see the trend and role of technology to take advantage of it in modern journalism.

Mr. Cuong emphasized that in heritage communication in the digital age, content is king, and form is queen. If we invest well in content and form, we will make a great impression on readers. In journalism, Longform is the form of expression of the present, while Podcast is the form of expression of the future.

“We have good content in our hands, meaning content is king, which has advantages but many competitors. Therefore, we must consider the transmission method as the queen. We must ensure that the content is informative, attractive and diverse in presentation. Multi-platform helps to reach more audiences. That is the trend in journalism in general,” Mr. Cuong added.

Technology trends force journalists to update

Sharing at the training session, Mr. Pham Tam Long, Government Electronic Information Portal, said that it is necessary to improve the efficiency of information transmission through platforms. Because the trend of people using cyberspace is increasing, it has a great impact on real living space. Not only providing an endless source of information, cyberspace is also a place to connect human society, promote production, business and increase the value of life.

"However, cyberspace with its 'virtual' characteristics, easy anonymity, and fast spread has become a favorable environment for spreading fake news, bad and toxic information," said Mr. Pham Tam Long.

It can be said that the Covid-19 pandemic has clearly revealed both the positive and negative aspects of cyberspace. In this context, it is necessary to proactively participate in social networks to enhance its positivity and limit its negativity.

With his experience, Dr. Tran Quoc Trung, Head of Multimedia Design Department, Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology, shares journalism skills through the use of digital tools (designing tables, infographics diagrams, etc.). Journalists need knowledge and skills in journalism, and a correct understanding of information graphics.

According to Mr. Trung, in the current trend, tools are quite familiar when working such as editing software, smart devices, social networking platforms. However, there needs to be a connection between the platform and the press.

Integrated skills such as writing, reporting, interviewing, and multimedia skills are required. Technology is becoming a necessary skill in today's era. Infographics help us convey information or data in the most visual way, in order to convey information or data more effectively and attractively, retain viewers, and increase interaction.

However, Dr. Tran Quoc Trung believes that in the current context of Vietnam, the factors of retention and increased interaction have not been fully exploited. Therefore, a more appropriate approach and more effective application of technology are needed. Information graphics in the field of journalism will enhance the storytelling ability of journalism in many ways by making complex information accessible.

However, Mr. Trung also mentioned the issues raised in exploiting Inforgraphic in the field of journalism, which are the complexity of data, technology platform, compatibility on multiple platforms, data verification, knowledge of visual design, image overload, information... From there, according to Mr. Trung, to build a visual publication, it is necessary to measure it with a new technology platform to come up with a development strategy.

“Technology trends require journalists to stay updated. We must understand new types of graphics to build content. Technology is a means to help us shorten the process of concretization. We need to understand users by surveying, listening, or using technology platforms to check,” emphasized Dr. Tran Quoc Trung.
