Requirements for new generation students in the digital age

Sharing at the seminar, Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong, Director of the National Economics University, emphasized that although we are talking a lot about the digital world , the ultimate goal of humans is the real world. The digital world is just a supplement, helping the real world become increasingly richer and better.

Similarly, with digital space and real space, the ultimate goal of humans is still real space. No matter how much artificial intelligence (AI) develops, in the end, human-to-human contact and the expression of feelings and emotions are still the highest and most important things. All technology is developed to serve the real world.

“That is why, a few years ago, the National Economics University affirmed that it would allow students to use AI and ChatGPT, without prohibiting them. The important thing is how students will use these tools,” said Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong.

According to him, for students, the ultimate requirement is the ability to master technology and the situation. When students study, tools like ChatGPT can help provide answers, but they need to understand and apply those answers. “Mastery” here means that students must pose problems and understand the process, and ChatGPT or other tools will help provide solutions. Lecturers need to provide students with knowledge and thinking methods so that they can understand and master technology.

“In the digital age, AI can help with the things that need to be remembered and summarized. However, posing problems, understanding how to do things, developing and criticizing problems, and creative thinking are requirements for new generation students. AI will be a tool, a friend, but the most important thing is still your own thinking and knowledge to understand everything that AI is doing,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong.

The Director of the National Economics University also said that the school is moving towards applying the Lecture/Seminar training method. This model is understood as teaching and learning a subject/course combining Lecture classes and Seminar classes in one semester. A Lecture class consists of one or more course classes (students register to study the same subject/course) with a size of no more than 300 students; a Seminar class is a course class with a size of 20 to 30 students.

With this model, students will have the right to attend or not attend lectures for about half of the time in the subjects. All lectures in smart classrooms will be recorded. Students can participate online or can save video tapes to study at any time. In the Seminar class, students mainly interact directly with each other, interact with the lecturer and solve situations, practical exercises as well as specific tasks.

Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong expressed his hope that with the Lecture/Seminar training method and tools such as ChatGPT and software, students' learning will become easier, in shorter time, they will learn more knowledge and master more technology. This is also the school's training goal in the digital context.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, Deputy Director of the National Economics University, said that in recent years, the National Economics University has undergone strong changes and transformations in both its organizational structure and in improving the quality of training.

Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong emphasized that in recent times, the development of science and technology, especially AI technology, has impacted all aspects of social life. The National Economics University aims to promote its inherent capabilities, applying achievements of science and technology to the training and teaching process such as: how to write textbooks, how to evaluate students, apply AI to the teaching process, making lectures lively, imparting knowledge most effectively; helping students become more interested in the learning process,...

That is the reason why National Economics University organized the Seminar "Innovation in teaching and learning methods to adapt to the development of technology and artificial intelligence".

The Vice President of the National Economics University hopes that the presentations and opinions from experts at the Seminar can provide the most practical solutions to effectively apply AI in the teaching process, according to practical models.

Universities need to guide students on how to use AI effectively for learning purposes

At the Seminar, delegates gave many opinions related to innovating teaching and learning methods to adapt to the development of technology and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy, Principal of the School of Technology, National Economics University, said that applying AI to education will help lecturers improve teaching quality by creating outlines, lectures, examples, test questions, quickly and with quality using AI. At the same time, automating repetitive tasks such as grading papers, checking grammar, saving time for more valuable tasks such as guiding students, innovating teaching methods. AI supports lecturers in self-development, self-learning new knowledge, new technology, new skills.

AI also supports lecturers in scientific research by helping to automate the following steps: searching for documents, citing, and automatically summarizing to quickly understand core content; helping to write effective academic articles: suggesting article structures, standardizing according to international academics, checking spelling, grammar, and natural expression.

For students, AI helps optimize learning time and efficiency. AI helps students review, do homework, prepare presentations without spending too much time searching for information; summarize documents, explain specialized terms. When using AI properly, students learn how to ask questions, verify information, and think critically. AI can also suggest counterarguments to an argument, helping students look at problems from multiple perspectives, as well as support foreign language and skill learning.

However, Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy also emphasized that AI poses unprecedented challenges to independent thinking and academic fraud in education. For lecturers, the challenge comes from changing teaching methods from imparting knowledge to guiding and training critical thinking skills. In addition, there are difficulties in testing and evaluating students' academic integrity; and difficulties in continuously updating knowledge and technology.

For students, many are dependent on AI, which reduces their ability to think independently. Many students lack the skills to verify information, are easily misled, use unofficial sources; have difficulty developing personally, and are competitive in their jobs.

MSc. Nguyen Tri Hien, CEO of Thien Ha Xanh Education Technology Joint Stock Company, commented that the future of AI in education could include “hyper-personalized” learning – where AI analyzes student data to create a fully tailored learning path; along with virtual classrooms and augmented reality (VR/AR) simulations integrated with AI, providing immersive learning experiences. AI will also support teachers more strongly through “AI assistants”, helping with lesson planning and effective assessment. However, an ethical legal framework needs to be developed to ensure that AI is used fairly and safely.

According to Master Nguyen Tri Hien, Vietnam has made significant progress in education. The government spends 20% of its budget on education. However, challenges remain, such as the gap between urban and rural areas and the need to modernize the curriculum.

Therefore, this expert suggests that AI integration should focus on infrastructure and access by ensuring that schools, especially in rural areas, have the necessary technology and internet connectivity, and provide professional development programs for teachers to effectively use AI tools.

MSc. Nguyen Tri Hien also proposed integrating AI skills into the curriculum and developing educational content suitable to local culture and needs; encouraging the Government to develop policies to support the use of AI, protect student data and promote cooperation with international organizations; and build a sustainable EdTech & AI ecosystem in Vietnam.

Speaking at the seminar, a student representing the first Artificial Intelligence class of the School of Technology, National Economics University shared that during the learning process, he and his friends used AI a lot. AI is both a teacher and a friend, when teachers cannot closely monitor all 40 students in a class.

This student emphasized that the problem of AI abuse for student exams and discussions is not a new problem. In fact, students with the mindset of “cheating” have always appeared. When AI was not as developed as it is today, they could copy from other sources such as books or research papers.

AI is just one of the tools that students with a “cheating” mindset use to copy. However, for many other students, AI helps support learning and research easier.

"Therefore, I propose that instead of restricting students from using AI, the school should guide us on how to use AI accurately and effectively for learning purposes," this student expressed.
