The lottery company released a photo of Mr. Hurt winning the prize on October 22.

The News and Observer reported on October 23 that a man in Roanoke City (Virginia, USA) won $1 million in the lottery after joking with his co-workers about winning the lottery.

George Hurt joked with a co-worker as they went out to lunch before buying four lottery tickets. One of the tickets turned out to be a $1 million Virginia Millions scratch-off, the Virginia Lottery said on Oct. 22.

“I am proof that prayers do come true,” he said.

The man had a 1 in 612,000 chance of winning one of the three final $1 million prizes in the Virginia Millions, which will be offered in November 2023. The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 3.5.

The deadline to claim the prize is April 2, 2025. The winner can receive the full $1 million (before taxes) over 30 years or receive a lump sum of $571,000 (before taxes).

Hurt chose to receive the money in a lump sum and has not said how he intends to spend his winnings, according to the lottery. The 604 Minute Store in Roanoke, which sold the winning ticket, received a $10,000 bonus on Oct. 21.

All of the Virginia Lottery’s profits go toward public education in Virginia. Mr. Hurt lives in Roanoke, which received $27 million from the lottery for public education last year.

In fiscal 2024, the company brought in $934 million, accounting for nearly 10% of Virginia's total public education budget.

Also on October 22, the company said that Mr. Andrew Logan won the Mega Millions prize worth $1 million, after buying a lottery ticket at a Kroger store in Mechaniscville town with the series of 6 numbers he often chose.

Results on September 24 showed that he matched 5/6 numbers and won the second prize of Mega Millions. Mr. Logan is in business and has not shared his intention to spend the money.
