Brick phone models worth considering after turning off 2G
Báo Dân trí•16/10/2024
(Dan Tri) - "Brick" phone is the familiar name for basic phone models, simple design, using physical keyboard and only including the main function of listening, calling, and texting.
Network operators complete 2G service shutdown from October 15
On October 15, mobile network service providers in Vietnam completed the process of turning off 2G networks nationwide. Previously, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) and network operators planned to turn off 2G networks from September 15. However, due to the impact of storm No. 3, the MIC issued Circular No. 10/2024/TT-BTTTT on September 13, extending the provision of 2G Only service by one month (ie October 15) to ensure communication during the process of overcoming the consequences of storms and floods. Before Vietnam, many countries in the world have also turned off 2G waves to focus resources on developing newer 4G and 5G network technologies (Illustration: Getty). A representative of the Telecommunications Department said that at the beginning of 2024, the entire network still had over 18 million subscribers using 2G terminals. However, by October 10, there were only 771,072 subscribers in this category, accounting for less than 1% of mobile subscribers nationwide. In the past time, network operators such as Viettel, Vinaphone, MobiFone, Vietnamobile... have continuously sent messages and reminded subscribers who are still using devices that only support 2G networks to switch to new devices, ensuring that communication is not interrupted.
The biggest advantage of "brick" phones is their compact design, simple use and especially their very long battery life, which can last up to a week on a single charge. Therefore, this type of phone is very suitable for the elderly or those who do not require entertainment or internet connection, mainly used for daily communication. Many people mistakenly believe that all types of basic phones (feature phones) will be disabled and cannot be used after October 15. Basic phone models will not be affected after 2G waves are turned off, as long as the device supports newer network technologies (Illustration photo: Pinterest). However, in reality, this notion is completely wrong. The basic phones that have been released recently all support the new generation 4G network, so they can still be used normally. Older models, released many years ago and only supporting 2G networks, have just stopped working after the network operators stopped 2G services.

Shutting down 2G is an inevitable trend in the development of mobile technology. 2G networks are outdated and cannot meet users' increasing demands for data transmission speed and internet access. Shutting down 2G will also help network operators focus resources on developing newer 4G and 5G network technologies. Shutting down 2G will help utilize frequency resources for more modern telecommunications technologies. Shutting down 2G will also help reduce electromagnetic pollution, as 2G networks use old technology and consume a lot of energy to broadcast. Currently, many countries in the world have completely turned off 2G waves, such as the US (started turning off 2G waves since 2017), Japan (turned off 2G waves since 2010), South Korea (turned off 2G waves since 2011), Singapore (turned off 2G waves since 2017), Thailand (turned off 2G waves since 2019)...
