Veteran singers face challenges

Từ trái qua: Hà Trần, Cẩm Ly và Phương Thanh đều đã hoạt động âm nhạc trên 30 năm

From left to right: Ha Tran, Cam Ly and Phuong Thanh have all been active in music for over 30 years.

"Doing a live show is not simple, it takes a lot of preparation, sometimes a whole year. Last year I should have celebrated my 30th anniversary because this year is already 31 years.

But I had health problems and after the pandemic everything was difficult. This year is probably enough time to thank the audience," singer Cam Ly shared when interacting with the media to introduce her 30th anniversary live show.

The silence was too long, Cam Ly was afraid the audience would forget her

Cam Ly confided: "I think if my silence is too long, the audience will forget me. It's natural that they accept new things. I'm very worried and scared."

Cam Ly's live show celebrating 30 years of singing called Tu Tinh Que Huong 6 will take place on the evening of August 3 at Hoa Binh Theater, Ho Chi Minh City. The last live show took place 9 years ago. She is the latest name in the group of veteran singers who have been announcing a show to celebrate their careers on this occasion.

Previously, Ha Tran announced the live concert Tinh Khoi Galaxy to celebrate 30 years of singing; including two shows at Military Zone 7 Stadium (HCMC) on the evening of August 10 and My Dinh Athletics Palace (Hanoi) on the evening of August 24.

Previously, Ha Tran released the album Nhung con song ngon tay, the latest studio album after Ban Nguyen 8 years ago.

Phuong Thanh, a singer who has been active for 34 years, also had a live concert titled "The Thorny Rose" at the Ho Guom Theater (Hanoi) on May 25.

Initially, she only planned to hold the show in Hanoi, but due to fan requests, she decided to hold two more shows in Quang Ninh and Ho Chi Minh City, scheduled to take place this year.

Although not yet a veteran name, Uyen Linh has her own place in the market. She also recently announced that she will hold celebrations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in November to celebrate her 15th year of singing.

With 26 years of singing, Tuan Hung recently "moved south" with the MV Golden Apple, the album Demi-God (not released yet) and plans to tour some places. He also went to Ho Chi Minh City to participate in the program Anh Trai Vuon Ngan Cong Gai.

However, the first step of the project series was a bit "misguided" when the MV Golden Apple encountered many negative comments, causing Tuan Hung to remove the MV and declare that he would no longer use the song.

Having been singing for 20 years, Tung Duong recently spent 1 billion VND to make the MV "Phoenix Wings". The singer announced that his new version is very excited about the youthful changes and is ready to reach out to more new audiences.

The Challenge of Being an Ex

When veteran singers do their own shows, which often last for hours, they face many challenges because they are no longer young. On the other hand, a 20 or 30-year singing career often goes through many genres of music, styles, many iconic songs, and memorable memories.

For example, Cam Ly used to sing pop music, lyrical music, folk music, Cantonese opera, and act in plays... Ha Tran used to sing pop, world music, electronic, trip hop, blue, rock, alternative...

Singers and crews must be carefully selected to not miss memorable milestones and to please many different audience groups.

Ha Tran said that a studio album only requires one team to work together; but a live show or live concert requires many teams from many different stages to work together in harmony.

Another pressure is whether the audience is enthusiastic and supportive. Long-time singers all have loyal and long-standing audiences, but can they attract young and new audiences?

Ha Tran shared the difference when organizing the 30th anniversary concert compared to the beginning of her career: "My singing no longer comes from my throat but from my heart and soul. I believe I will be closer to audiences of all classes and ages."

Another factor is the way the show is promoted and marketed. When they return, many veteran singers realize that the performance market has changed dramatically.

To get their anniversary show noticed, they also need to innovate and modernize their promotion and marketing methods so that audiences know and buy tickets.

Phoenix Wings is the MV to kick off a personal live show and the Multiverse album planned to be released in November this year by Tung Duong.

Besides opinions supporting the idea of music approaching the masses, changing the perspective of music that is difficult to listen to and difficult to approach, and collaborating with Gen Z artists to expand the audience, the 8x singer also faced many comments and criticisms of "losing quality".

That's also what veteran artists have to face when they want to "renew" themselves.

Generation gap with gen Z

Tùng Dương nhiều lần cover nhạc trẻ, sắp hợp tác ca sĩ gen Z

Tung Duong has covered pop music many times and is about to collaborate with a Gen Z singer.

Tung Duong will collaborate with Gen Z singers in an upcoming song. They may be ten or twenty years younger than him.

Regarding the generation gap, he told Tuoi Tre: "I cannot relive my youth. I am nearly 50 years old, a father, and sing with the mindset of a father.

I don't try to be young, I just take the energy of young people. Young people are busy celebrating their own emotions.

But when they go through years like me, they will honor others more than their own unique emotions."

Phuong Thanh wrote on her personal page after organizing the live show Doa Hong Thorn in Hanoi: "If we do a quality live show, we have to lose money to gain fame. We realize that selling our house is normal and we can do shows to earn it back later."
