On the afternoon of April 16, the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee held a discussion "50 years of Ho Chi Minh City literature and art - Promoting tradition, continuing the future".
Proud of the brilliant milestones
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Le Hong Son - Member of the City Party Committee, Deputy Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee - said that the seminar was organized with the aim of continuing to exchange and listen to experts, researchers, culturalists, and artists to contribute ideas and propose solutions to effectively promote the construction and development of Ho Chi Minh City's literature and arts in the coming time.
The conference's organizing committee received 86 papers, and after review, agreed to select 65 papers to edit the proceedings. The content of the papers is each different perspective on thematic groups about achievements and solutions to build and develop Ho Chi Minh City's literature and arts after 50 years of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification.

People's Artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that the literary and artistic activities of Ho Chi Minh City in the 50 years since the country's reunification have closely followed the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws and policies, and the requirements set for the industry and fields, meeting the people's need for cultural and spiritual enjoyment.
The music field has a series of outstanding works such as: "Spring in Ho Chi Minh City" (author Xuan Hong, composed in 1975), "The Country Full of Joy" (Hoang Ha), "Singing from the City Named After Him" (music: Cao Viet Bach, lyrics: Dang Trung, Cao Viet Bach), "The City of Love and Nostalgia" (music: Pham Minh Tuan, poetry: Nguyen Nhat Anh)...; cinema has works that just mentioning their names brings great pride such as the films "Wild Field" (director Nguyen Hong Sen), "The Upside Down Card" (director Le Hoang Hoa), "Far and Near" (director Huy Thanh), "Saigon Special Forces" (director Long Van)... Ho Chi Minh City is considered the cinema center of the country, currently in the city there are more than 100 establishments registered and producing and distributing films, of which about 30 establishments operate regularly. The whole city has 38 cinema complexes with over 200 screening rooms, serving more than 4 million audiences/year.
With the direction and support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ho Chi Minh City has submitted an application to join the "UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of cinema", with the expectation of being recognized as the first film city in Southeast Asia.
The stage with classic drama works, the pride of the Ho Chi Minh City drama art. Works associated with two generations of golden artists such as: People's Artist Kim Cuong ("Durian Leaves"), People's Artist Kim Xuan ("The House Without Men"), Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc with a series of famous plays. Those who love Ho Chi Minh City drama in the 1980s and 1990s cannot forget Quoc Thao and Minh Trang in many plays such as "Thunderstorm", "A Stolen Life"... The art of reformed theater in the early years after liberation created a golden age with a series of plays that set the standard for stage art, many artists affirmed their names and singing and acting talents.
Other fields such as literature, fine arts, photography, architecture, and dance have produced many excellent works that have spread widely among the people, becoming important marks in each period of construction and development of Ho Chi Minh City.
Focus on training, constantly improve quality
Artists participating in the discussion were particularly interested in the work of training and developing human resources and highly appreciated the work of Ho Chi Minh City in carrying out this work. According to many delegates, the plan issued by Ho Chi Minh City to implement the "Program to improve quality, discover and foster talents and talents in the fields of culture - arts, physical education - sports in Ho Chi Minh City" has created many talents such as: Meritorious Artist Linh Nga (dance), Dinh Nhat Minh (folk music), Hoang Ngoc Anh Quan (Clarinet)...
Art units in Ho Chi Minh City are also interested in implementing art performance programs serving the suburbs and new rural areas, attractive and highly educational models serving children; the "School Stage" program serving students, contributing to nurturing the soul, spreading the love of folk and traditional arts, effectively contributing to the preservation of national cultural values, in which the Lac Long Quan Stage Club of Tran Huu Trang Theater is prominent.
In addition, socialized art units in Ho Chi Minh City are also increasingly developing with rich and diverse models and methods of operation, further enlivening the city's cultural and artistic activities.
Be aware of responsibility
According to People's Artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Ho Chi Minh City has implemented the Project "Strategy for developing Ho Chi Minh City's cultural industry to 2035" to contribute to enhancing the position, image and overall strength of the country in the international arena. Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City has invested in many key cultural works and institutions in the form of public investment and public-private partnership, notably works such as: Circus, Phu Tho Multi-purpose Performance, City Children's House, Ton Duc Thang Museum, etc.
However, People's Artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy said that besides the achievements, Ho Chi Minh City's literature and arts still have shortcomings. That is, the results achieved are not equal to the position, role, ability and requirements of construction, protection and development; there are not many literary and artistic works with high ideological and artistic value; theoretical and critical activities of literature and arts have not kept up with current requirements, some works follow the taste, low quality; the phenomenon of copyright infringement in the fields of music, fine arts, cinema and other literature and arts still exists and has not been effectively overcome. The innovation of content and methods of operation of literary and artistic associations is still slow.
In the context of the country's organizational and apparatus streamlining revolution, Ho Chi Minh City is facing the mission of maintaining its position as the center of the Southern key economic region and the country; playing a very important role in the development strategy of the whole country, Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong - Member of the Standing Committee, Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, emphasized: "Living, working and creating in peace, we must see our responsibility to the country and the city. From there, we cannot just do art for passion but must do art for humanity and above all for the Fatherland".
According to People's Artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Ho Chi Minh City is home to a large and diverse creative and performing force; it is the largest artistic environment in the country, a place that nurtures the development of many generations of artists.
