In recent days, the bustling atmosphere has filled the fishing ports as fishermen hurriedly set sail after the Tet holiday. The first spring trips were lucky as many fishing boats arrived at the shore with holds full of anchovies. The joy of a good harvest spread, signaling a favorable year of seafood fishing.

Having just returned from a night of fishing at sea with a hold full of more than 2 tons of anchovies, Mr. Tran Kiem, captain of fishing boat number QT 91555TS in Cua Viet town, Gio Linh district happily said that his fishing boat started going out to sea again on February 14 (ie January 17), on average he caught 2-3 tons of anchovies per trip, totaling about 15 tons so far. The selling price on shore to traders is also relatively stable, averaging 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg for anchovies to make fish sauce, 15,000 - 18,000 VND/kg for fresh anchovies, larger sizes are used to make steamed fish.
According to Mr. Kiem, unlike fishermen in the South Central provinces, fishermen in Quang Tri do not fish during Tet at sea, but after finishing the last fishing trip of the year, fishermen all bring their boats back to shore to rest and celebrate Tet. After Tet, around January 4-5, depending on the "good day", a few fishing boats will start going out to sea to "take the day" as fishermen call it to pray for good luck in the spring. The rest of the fishermen only really go out to sea to fish after the full moon of January, when the weather is stable and the fish schools begin to gather.
Along with Mr. Kiem, Mr. Le Van Cuong, captain of fishing boat number QT 94466TS in Cua Viet town, has also had fruitful early spring fishing trips. Since the full moon of January, his fishing boat has gone out to sea 4 times, each trip catching about 1.5 - 3 tons of anchovies. This is an important source of income, contributing to stabilizing the lives of fishermen and creating momentum for the next fishing trips.
Not only fishing boats, fishing logistics boats have also been operating vigorously to serve fishermen. Mr. Le Van Bong, captain of fishing boat QT 91739TS, specializing in purchasing seafood at sea in Cua Viet town, said that his fishing boat started fishing on January 13. At that time, he followed fishing boats out to sea to Quang Ngai waters.
From January 17th, he returned to purchase at the Quang Tri fishing grounds. Since after Tet, his fishing boat has purchased more than 50 tons of anchovies at prices ranging from 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg for fish used to make fish sauce, 12,000 - 13,000 VND/kg for beautiful fish used for steaming, and fresh fish sold to traders at markets at prices ranging from 18,000 - 20,000 VND/kg.
Along with the hustle and bustle of fishermen going out to sea, activities at fishing ports are also bustling. Fishing boats are anchored close together, the sound of the engines blends with the voices of buyers and sellers. Mr. Phan Duc Khanh, representative of Cua Viet market fishing port, said that from January 15 until now, on average, 12-15 fishing boats, mainly local fishermen, have docked at the port to unload their catch.
Through checking the output, on average each boat catches about 3 tons of anchovies, with some boats hitting the right fish run, reaching 7-8 tons per trip. With this abundant output, the fishing port of Cua Viet market is witnessing a new prosperous fishing season.
According to Vice Chairwoman of Cua Viet Town People's Committee Hoang Thi Thu Thuy, the town has a total of nearly 300 boats, of which 145 are 15 meters or longer and specialize in offshore fishing. According to preliminary statistics, from the beginning of 2025 until now, the town's total catch has reached about 1,800 tons, of which after Tet alone, it has reached about 1,500 tons, mainly anchovies.
The current fish price is also quite stable, helping fishermen have a good income. Although they have only started fishing for about a week, after deducting expenses, it is estimated that each boat will receive 10 - 15 million VND, depending on the boat. In addition, the anchovy fishermen have also created conditions for dozens of fish steamers in the town to operate at full capacity, creating jobs for hundreds of local workers.
“In addition to anchovies, some boats also caught catfish, such as the boat of fisherman Ho Van Tha, which caught 6 tons of catfish, and the boat of fisherman Tran Hong Linh, which caught 1 ton. This type of seafood has a relatively high selling price, from 40,000 - 100,000 VND/kg depending on size, bringing high income to fishermen,” Ms. Thuy added.
Head of the Fisheries Sub-Department Phan Huu Thang said that since the beginning of the year, taking advantage of favorable weather, aquatic resources have appeared in abundance, especially anchovies, so fishing boats, purse seine nets, etc. have actively gone offshore to produce, many boats have achieved high output. The total estimated output of aquatic products in the first two months of the year reached more than 3,500 tons.
Accompanying fishermen, the unit has actively guided ship owners and captains to organize and implement well the work of cooperative teams, fishermen's groups to unite in production, go offshore and stick to the sea in favorable weather conditions to ensure safety and improve production. At the same time, it has strengthened propaganda and guided fishermen to go offshore and stick to the sea, exploit in the right areas and on the right routes, not violating regulations on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU)...
“With positive signals, Quang Tri fishermen are having a promising start to the 2025 fishing season. Not only bringing a stable income, the bumper fishing season also contributes to promoting local economic development, creating more jobs and stabilizing the lives of thousands of workers in the seafood industry,” said Mr. Thang.
