Many activities to raise social awareness about the LGBT community in Can Tho

On November 8, the Working Group of the Committee for Foreign Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), led by Ms. Do Thi Kim Dung - Deputy Head of the People's Aid Coordination Board (Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations), had a working session with the leaders of the Can Tho City Social Work Center.

At the working session, the delegation listened to and exchanged information on the implementation of the Project "Rainbow Voices - Enhancing the participation of children and adolescents with sexual and gender diversity in the policy development process in Vietnam" (Project).

Overview of the working session.

The project is organized by the Norwegian Gender Diversity Initiative (FRI) through Save the Children International in Vietnam (SCI). The implementing unit is the Can Tho City Social Work Center under the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Can Tho City. Up to now, the project has organized activities for LGBTI+ youth and LGBTI+ youth activists. Improving leadership skills and proactively participating in local awareness raising activities to advocate for the rights of LGBTI+ youth. The project has supported CBOs groups in the Mekong Delta region to carry out important events (such as VietPride, IDAHOT, Transgender Day of Visibility). In the third quarter of 2024, the Project Management Board supported the student group of Can Tho College to carry out SHIFT 2 with 7 activities. Up to now, the project has had 5 initiatives, attracting more than 2,230 participants...

Representatives of CBO groups and project beneficiaries shared about the advantages and difficulties in the process of project implementation.

According to Mr. Ho Thanh Hai, Director of the Can Tho City Social Work Center: The project's activities are all suitable to the actual situation, meeting the needs of the beneficiary group of LGBT youth, students, teachers, parents and local officials. Some good and effective models of the project have been applied and replicated locally by the Social Work Center such as: Mock trial model, school dialogue.

The Director of the Can Tho City Social Work Center emphasized: During the process of participating in the project, members of community support groups (CBOs), teachers, students, and university students have all improved their capacity in planning, implementing activities, and evaluating effectiveness. Above all, they have boldly promoted the qualities and skills of each individual, improving many aspects of soft skills.

At the working session, the Center and representatives of CBO groups also shared some difficulties in the project implementation process.

Ms. Do Thi Kim Dung - Deputy Head of the People's Aid Coordination Board acknowledged and highly appreciated the information contributions to the delegation from the Can Tho City Social Work Center and representatives of groups benefiting from the project.

Ms. Do Thi Kim Dung expressed her hope that at the end of the project, the relevant parties will have realistic assessments of the project implementation situation. Clearly inform about difficulties and obstacles, promptly report to relevant departments and branches during the project implementation process. At the same time, closely connect and coordinate with local authorities, as well as mass organizations such as: Women's Union, Farmers' Association, Youth Union... in accordance with the conditions at the unit to create a spread for the project.
