According to a newly released report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), about 40% of skilled foreign workers choose to stay in Japan.
This is a relatively high rate, which is a boon for the Asian country, which is struggling to cope with a labor shortage. According to the report, 50% of the approximately 3 million foreigners living in Japan in 2022 will be permanent residents. The remaining half will mainly consist of temporary migrant workers and their families, technical intern trainees and international students. Of the skilled foreign workers who first came to Japan between 2011 and 2017 on engineer or office work visas, 40% remained in Japan after five years.
However, the report also noted that finding a job remains a challenge for international students as only a few universities support this group in finding internships during their studies.
