In a statement issued after the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) ministerial meeting in Vientiane, Laos on October 8, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi affirmed that human rights is an important regional challenge that ASEAN must face.
“Everywhere we see various challenges related to human rights. This highlights the vulnerability in protecting these rights,” said the head of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.
Referring to solutions such as strengthening the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and promoting cooperation with ASEAN partner countries, Ms. Retno Marsudi stated that the right to development is an inseparable part of efforts to realize human rights and global peace.
Besides, the Indonesian diplomat also mentioned the challenges that ASEAN faces regarding developments in the East Sea, expressing hope to prevent escalation in the maritime area.
