According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Lao Cai currently has 107 irrigation reservoirs; 22 dams and inter-commune canals; 143 dams and canals in a commune and more than 2,500 irrigation points. Through inspection and review, it is shown that the irrigation reservoirs still basically maintain stable water levels, ensuring water supply for irrigation for agricultural production. Of which, 98 irrigation reservoirs are operating normally (78 reservoirs have a capacity of 90% - 100%; 20 reservoirs have a capacity of over 50% - 90%).
However, the whole province has 9 irrigation lakes that are not suitable for irrigation due to degradation, being repaired or being affected by the 2024 flood season. Specifically, 3 lakes are under construction or repair (Sin Chai A lake, Ta Ngai Cho commune, Muong Khuong district; Na Co lake, Bac Ha town, Bac Ha district; Lang Mung lake, Tan Duong commune, Bao Yen district); 4 lakes have silted up and are no longer able to hold water (Coc Lay lake, Cam Con commune, Bao Yen district; Muc village lake, Thai Nien commune, Bao Thang district; Ong Luu lake, Van Hoa commune, Lao Cai city; Nam Tri lake, Bao Nhai commune, Bac Ha district); 2 lakes do not store water due to dam damage caused by natural disasters (Khuoi Ria lake, Nghia Do commune, Bao Yen district and Hoa Chu Phung lake, Quan Ho Than commune, Si Ma Cai district).

To ensure irrigation for the 2025 spring crop, the agricultural and environmental sector has accelerated the repair of damaged reservoirs; directed irrigation management teams to flexibly operate irrigation reservoirs to ensure sufficient water storage for production and dam safety.
