Vietnam commits to promoting and protecting human rights

In 2025, Vietnam will conduct dialogues on national reports on the implementation of important international conventions related to human rights such as CRPD, ICCPR, CEDAW.

According to a VNA correspondent in Geneva, on February 26, within the framework of the general discussion at the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva, emphasized Vietnam's commitment to promoting and protecting human rights.

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung congratulated the new President of the United Nations Human Rights Council and affirmed close cooperation from Vietnam.

The Ambassador said that Vietnam completed the fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in September 2024 and is developing a master plan to implement the accepted recommendations.

In 2025, Vietnam will conduct dialogues on national reports on the implementation of important international conventions related to human rights such as CRPD, ICCPR, CEDAW.

Despite various challenges, Vietnam’s economy grew over 7% in 2024, multidimensional poverty fell to 1.9%, health insurance coverage expanded, and education quality improved across the country. Vietnam targets growth of over 8% in 2025, laying the foundation for double-digit growth from 2026 and better conditions for promoting human rights.

The Ambassador also emphasized Vietnam's commitment to responding to climate change, with the goal of achieving net-zero by 2050 and ensuring a just energy transition.

At the 56th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2024, Vietnam, together with Bangladesh and the Philippines, introduced an annual resolution on human rights and climate change, focusing on a just transition.

Emphasizing its active role in promoting and protecting human rights, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung announced that Vietnam is running for re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term, with the unanimous support of ASEAN countries.

The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam is ready to cooperate with partners to promote a comprehensive and constructive human rights program based on dialogue and cooperation./.
