Vietnamese people study abroad the most in Southeast Asia

Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia are the three largest markets in Southeast Asia for student migration abroad, with Vietnam leading the way.

The Key Trends in Southeast Asia 2024 report by Acumen, an international education consultancy, on February 7 showed that Vietnam has more than 132,000 international students. It is followed by Malaysia and Indonesia, each with more than 56,000 international students, and Thailand with only 32,000.

This data is based on statistics from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) by Acumen.

The top two destinations for Vietnamese students are Japan (more than 44,100) and South Korea (nearly 25,000). Meanwhile, Indonesians, Malaysians and Thais move most to the UK and Australia. In the US market, Vietnamese students also lead Southeast Asia, with more than 23,100.

Among the five countries with the most Vietnamese students are Australia (more than 14,100) and Canada (nearly 9,000).

China, which is not included in the UNESCO data, is also considered a top destination for Southeast Asian students. The Chinese government has not released international enrolment data since 2020, but in 2019, the country hosted 28,600 Thai students, 15,000 Indonesian students, 11,300 Vietnamese students and 9,500 Malaysian students.

According to ICEF Monitor , a leading international education organization, the West will face more competition from Japan, South Korea and China. Japan is working to increase international student enrollment to 400,000, while South Korea aims for 300,000 by 2027. Both East Asian powers promise more job opportunities after graduation for foreign students.

In addition, Asian destinations help students save money due to their geographical proximity and a series of universities ranked among the world's top. According to the 2024 THE rankings, there are 33 Asian schools in the top 200, up 5 schools from last year. Meanwhile, the US has more schools in the top (56 schools), but the cost is getting more expensive.

In many other reports, ICEF affirmed that Vietnam is in the top 10 markets in the world for student mobility abroad. Vietnamese are in the top 5 in terms of international students in the US, top 2 in Japan, top 6 in Australia, top 1 in Taiwan. Statistics from the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training in 2019 showed that there were more than 190,000 students abroad.

There are many reasons why Vietnam has become a "hot spot" for enrollment with global educational institutions.

More than a quarter (28%) of Vietnam's population is between the ages of 16 and 30. The university enrolment rate has also increased from 10% in 2001 to 29% after 18 years. In addition, education is a top concern for Vietnamese households. According to HSBC , each family's spending on education accounts for 47% of total expenditure. Vietnam's middle class is the fastest growing in Southeast Asia, meaning many families can afford to send their children abroad.

Another reason is that tuition fees at domestic international high schools can be up to 34,700 USD per year, equivalent to foreign tuition fees, while the quality is not comparable. Therefore, studying abroad from high school level is developing at the fastest rate, according to IDP's survey in 2022.
