Family of shooters
The first Gold Medal of the Vietnamese sports delegation at the 19th ASIAD was won by athlete Pham Quang Huy. With 240.5 points after 24 bullets, Pham Quang Huy won the Gold Medal in the men's 10m air pistol, 1.1 points more than Korean shooter Lee Won-ho. This is the first Gold Medal for Vietnamese shooting at the ASIAD arena since shooting participated in the Asian Games in 1982.
Phan Quang Huy was born in 1996 in Hai Phong, the son of former shooter Pham Cao Son, a monument of Vietnamese shooting. Mr. Pham Cao Son served the national team for 19 years with 11 Gold Medals, 6 Silver Medals and 5 Bronze Medals at the SEA Games. Mr. Pham Cao Son is currently the Head of the Shooting Department of the Hai Phong Department of Culture and Sports. Huy's mother is also a national shooter in the rifle category, Ms. Dang Thi Hang. Huy's younger brother is also a shooter, having won high achievements at national youth shooting competitions.
Born in Hai Phong, Quang Huy moved to Hanoi at the age of 1, living with his parents at the National Sports Training Center I (Nhon, Nam Tu Liem District) for 7 years. He became familiar with the shooting environment from a young age and started practicing this sport at the age of 16. Quang Huy's sports career is truly passed down from father to son because Huy is also passionate, practicing and competing in the same event that his father was famous for: men's 10m air pistol.
Students continue their teacher's dream
After finishing his playing career, Hoang Xuan Vinh, the first Vietnamese to win an Olympic Gold Medal, turned to coaching. One of the athletes he directly trained for the national team was Pham Quang Huy.
Pham Quang Huy is the person who was directly trained by shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh.
ASIAD 19 is the first time Pham Quang Huy has competed in an individual final at the Asian level. Right after his excellent student won the Gold Medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation, Hoang Xuan Vinh hugged his student and celebrated emotionally. The former Army shooter can rest assured that he has a replacement to take on the responsibility of the Vietnamese shooting team.
What is special is that the men's 10m air pistol event is also the event in which shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh won a Gold Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics but failed at the 2010 ASIAD. Now, the student born in 1996 has helped his teacher continue his unfinished dream.
In 2012, Pham Quang Huy started practicing amateur shooting. In this year, he won a Bronze Medal in the National Cup and a Bronze Medal in the National Youth Championship. A year later, he became an official athlete of Hai Phong shooting. In 2015, he first achieved National Level 1, achieved National Reserve Master level in 2016 and achieved National Master level for the first time in 2017.
In 2017, Quang Huy achieved even more brilliant results in national and international youth competitions. He won 4 individual Gold Medals, 2 individual Bronze Medals, and 3 team Bronze Medals at the National Youth Championship. After that, he won a Bronze Medal for the National Outstanding Shooter Award. This athlete then continued to participate in the Asian Air Gun Championship.
After many years of hard training, Pham Quang Huy began participating in official tournaments from 2020. At the 31st SEA Games at home, Quang Huy won the Gold Medal in the 10m air pistol team event with two shooters Phan Cong Minh and Tran Quoc Cuong.
With 240.5 points after 24 rounds, Quang Huy won the historic Gold Medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation.
At the 19th ASIAD, the 1996-born shooter finished fourth in the qualifying round. He was also the only shooter from the Vietnamese team to reach the finals of the men's 10m air pistol individual event.
In the final round, the athlete born in 1996 only ranked fourth in the first knockout round, however, by the end of the fourth round, Pham Quang Huy took the lead with 160.8 points and maintained this position. After eliminating all opponents, the Gold Medal was a competition between Pham Quang Huy and Lee Won-ho (Korea). With 240.5 points after 24 bullets, Quang Huy won the historic Gold Medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation against Korean shooter Lee Won-ho.
