Vietnamese sports need 'new clothes' at SEA Games
Successful at the SEA Games when being in the top 3 of the entire delegation in the last 3 editions, in which the 31st SEA Games broke the medal record, but Vietnamese sports were not successful when entering the ASIAD and Olympic arenas.
The proof is that at the Paris Olympics, while the delegations of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines all won medals, Vietnamese athletes did not win any medals. This is the second consecutive Olympics in which Vietnamese sports have come up empty-handed.
At the conference to deploy the strategy for developing Vietnam's physical education and sports until 2030, with a vision to 2045, Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh, former Director of the Department of High Performance Sports of the Sports and Physical Training Committee (now the Department of Sports and Physical Training) said that the failure at the ASIAD and Olympics was "the pain of Vietnamese sports", requiring the sports industry to change its strategy.
"The downside of the SEA Games is that it depends on the host countries. If we depend on the SEA Games, it will lead to the dispersion of investment resources. We should not aim for the top 2 or top 3 of the SEA Games anymore. We must aim to be at the top in ASIAD or Olympic sports such as swimming, athletics, weightlifting, shooting, table tennis, or some martial arts. At the 2015 SEA Games, Vietnamese sports led in some Olympic sports," said Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh.
The former Director of the Department of High Performance Sports analyzed that after setting clear goals, we must unify the system of connecting athletes' training for purposes at the SEA Games, ASIAD and Olympics. "That connection will help centers in departments have the right policy of investing in human resources, especially for big playgrounds," Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh added.
Vietnam team finds it difficult to stabilize its performance
According to the Strategy for the Development of Vietnam's Sports and Physical Training to 2030, with a vision to 2045 approved by the Prime Minister, the Vietnamese team aims to be in the top 8 of Asia and win a ticket to the World Cup. The Vietnamese women's team is also assigned the task of being in the top 6 of Asia and continuing to participate in the Women's World Cup.
However, speaking at the conference, Mr. Tran Anh Tu, Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), affirmed that Vietnamese football is facing many obstacles.
Mr. Tran Anh Tu affirmed that there is no unified direction in football activities, the work of selecting and training young football talents, and there are still many differences at the clubs due to human resources and technical equipment, leading to a lack of connection between the lines and successive generations of athletes.
There are still differences in ensuring standards, infrastructure, football fields and football training facilities nationwide, and there are few football academies that meet international standards...
In addition, Vietnamese football is slow to apply science and technology in training, management, football coaching and building professional data.
In general, this is no longer new in modern football management thinking but has never been or is rarely approached in Vietnam in the process from selection to advanced training for players.
The organization of the youth competition system has changed but has not been as expected, although in modern times there has been a competition system spread across many age groups. The lack of regular competition has had certain effects on the continuous development of football talent.
Mr. Tran Anh Tu added: "We still lack many Vietnamese or foreign football experts coming to Vietnam who have achieved international standards, and the search and discovery of football talents of Vietnamese origin abroad has only recently received attention.
If these problems persist, professional football and the Vietnamese national team will find it difficult to have stable results."
