According to VGC , a man has been arrested for illegally possessing a copy of Starfield and leaking much of the game's content online. He has also been charged with stealing and attempting to illegally sell copies of the game.
According to Kotaku, Darin Harris, 29, was arrested by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee on August 24. He is currently facing charges of felony theft of property valued between $2,500 and $10,000, misdemeanors such as theft of property valued under $1,000, and possession of marijuana.
Starfield game leaker arrested for allegedly stealing game
Days before his arrest, Harris released a roughly 40-minute video of Starfield gameplay footage to his YouTube channel. Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax Media later attempted to block the leak, but the original video and shorter clips quickly spread online.
Harris later tweeted a video review of the game, in which he addressed Starfield director Todd Howard and the online fan reactions to him playing the game. He said what happened to him when he did, but Harris praised Starfield and advised people not to miss the game.
The charges allege that Harris downloaded multiple copies of the game, including the $300 Constellation edition, onto the Japanese e-commerce platform Mercari. But it remains unclear how he obtained copies of the game before it was officially released.
Starfield was originally scheduled to release last November, but in May 2022, the game was delayed to the first half of 2023. Bethesda then announced a further delay in March 2023, and Starfield is now scheduled to release on September 6.
The publisher said last week that Starfield has reached Gone Gold status. Players can pre-download the title on Xbox Series X/S now and on Steam on August 30.
