Fishermen in Mai Phu and Ho Do communes (Loc Ha district, Ha Tinh) are excited to enter the fishing season in Cua Sot area with an income of 1 - 2 million VND/day and night.
Fishermen in Mai Phu hurried to the river mouth to fish after days of heavy rain.
Cua Sot area is the downstream area of Nghen River, with a length of about 5 km from the mainland to the estuary. This is the border between Thach Kim, Thach Chau, Mai Phu, Ho Do communes, Loc Ha town (Loc Ha district) and Dinh Ban commune (Thach Ha district).
Every year, from around October to February of the following lunar year (around November to March of the following solar year) is the time when many sardines, stingrays, snappers, bottle fish, and moray fish... gather in this estuary, so people around the area flock to go fishing.
Working hard in the rain.
As an experienced fisherman, Mr. Pham Ngoc Tien in Mai Lam village (Mai Phu commune) shared: “During this time, the water is cold, the sea is rough, there is a lot of rain, flood water from upstream brings plankton, so many fish from the sea enter this estuary to both look for food and find shelter and spawning places. On the other hand, because the downstream of Nghen River this season has a very large water level, fast flow, bottom-feeding fish species... so casting nets, setting the bottom and fishing by other methods in this area are not as effective as fishing”.
Small boats anchored in the middle of Cua Sot creek quietly drop their fishing rods in the early morning.
According to Mr. Tien, fishermen in the area all understand the feeding habits and environment of fish species: sardines, mackerel, and bottle fish like to feed during the day, feed in schools, and feed at the bottom, especially on alluvial flats; while stingrays and silver carp usually feed at night... Mr. Tien's experience also shows that the time when the tide is high or low is when these fish species like to feed the most, while fishing when the water is still is not effective.
Fresh sardines keep biting the bait.
As a person who is passionate about fishing and mainly for a living, Nguyen Huy Hoang in Mai Lam village (Mai Phu commune) and his partner Phan Van Cuong often go to familiar alluvial grounds to cast their lines, regardless of day or night.
Equipment for a fishing trip of Mr. Hoang and his friends is a 6m long boat with a capacity of 16 CV, 6 - 8 fishing gears, 1 bait box, fish box with ice, drinking water, snacks, raincoats...
Mr. Hoang's boat partner shows off the results of a fishing session.
Mr. Nguyen Huy Hoang said: "Depending on the weather, the tide... a fishing trip usually lasts from 3 to 4 hours, 2 people can fish 2 to 3 times a day and night, dropping 6 to 8 fishing rods in the water at a time.
If the fishing trip goes well, on average, a fisherman can earn 2-3 kg of various types of fish. Because they are fresh and unpreserved, the fish are sold right at the wharf for 150-170 thousand VND/kg for small fish, and 350-400 thousand VND/kg for large fish. After deducting expenses, each fishing trip we earn from 350-600 thousand VND/person.
With this batch of fresh and delicious mackerel, Mr. Hoang's fishing session brought in nearly 600 thousand VND.
For many people in the area, fishing does not require much investment, but it provides good income and is highly entertaining, helping to relieve all fatigue. On beautiful days, with favorable tides, in the Cua Sot area, there are about 50 - 70 fishing boats of people from Mai Phu, Ho Do, Thach Kim communes and other neighboring localities in the area operating quite busily. Because fishing is close to shore, the fleet of boats is quite small, with a capacity of less than 20 CV or no engine, enough for 2 - 3 people to fish.
Practicing in the Cua Sot area, fishermen from Mai Lam village (Mai Phu commune) account for the largest number with 35 boats and dozens of skilled workers; especially the excellent "anglers" such as Mr. Nguyen Lan, Pham Ngoc Tien, Le Van Hoi, Le Xuan Tao... If diligent, fishermen in this area can earn from 1 - 2 million VND/day and night; on lucky days, it can be more than 3 million VND.
4 days ago, Mr. Le Xuan Tao was lucky to catch this stingray weighing nearly 8 kg, and sold it for nearly 3 million VND.
Mr. Dao Anh Van - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Mai Phu commune said: "Fishing does not yield much catch but is suitable for the simple exploitation environment and small-capacity fleet of fishermen in the area. During this season, each fishing boat can earn from 1 - 2 million VND/person/day and night, contributing to solving employment during the idle rainy season, increasing income for a part of the people.
In addition to encouraging and motivating people to produce and improve their lives, we also regularly remind everyone to ensure safety when working during the rainy and stormy season."
