In recent days, when the play "The Voice of the Jade Garden Bird" by author and director Minh Nguyet premiered at the Ho Chi Minh City Small Stage Drama Theater, the audience gave many compliments to artist Trung Dan when he replaced the role of the late People's Artist Diep Lang.
"I am happy and touched by the compliments from the audience after the last two performances. The crew is really happy and I myself have researched, based on the foundation that Mr. Diep Lang has exploited, to innovate, in line with the meaningful purpose that the author and director desire" - artist Trung Dan said.
He was lured back to the stage when filming contracts were somewhat leisurely. He accepted and told director Minh Nguyet that he wanted her to re-stage the play after a 25-year hiatus. In 1999, he watched the play and was fascinated by the role of People's Artist Diep Lang. A topic about homosexuality but very profound and meaningful.
Now newly staged, the play has a contemporary feel, giving young actors more room to perform. "I think you have put in a lot of effort and will do better in the upcoming performances of the work with the audience's support," said artist Trung Dan.
In 1999, the play "Tieng chim vuon ngoc lan" was the first breakthrough in the theater industry on the subject of homosexuals. Now, the play has been renamed "Tieng chim vuon ngoc", transformed with the context of Vietnam in the years 1945-1950. Therefore, all the characters have been renamed. The role of the father of silversmith Tran Hung, played by artist Trung Dan, attracted the audience, bringing charming laughter and at the same time tears of pity for his family's situation.
Viewers liked the ending when the old man sought revenge and faced the evil mayor, which was an ending that spoke of the law of karma of those who sowed karma. Artist Trung Dan's ability is always to master the drama, supporting young actors so that they can complete the emotions of the characters well such as: Quach Ngoc Tuyen (Tran Hung), Le Chi Na (Suoi Ngoc), Vo Minh Lam (Hoang Vu).
Although the play still has some stumbling blocks and the psychological flow is not stable, the support of artist Trung Dan in this play is a proof of the effort to bring a new product with dramatic colors to the audience.
After graduating from the Ho Chi Minh City Academy of Theatre and Cinema in 1985, in 1986, director Minh Nguyet worked at the District 5 Cultural House. She staged the play "I'm waiting for the director" (author Le Hoang) for her graduation exam and was performed by the Young Drama Group in 1989.
After a while, when she went to see the play "High Red Lantern" directed by Meritorious Artist Hoa Ha for the IDECAF stage, she was motivated to write the script "The Voice of the Magnolia Garden Birds".
The play premiered in 1999 with a cast of talented actors such as: Thanh Loc, Hong Van, Quoc Thao, Diep Lang, Viet Anh, Kim Xuan... And now with the new version, with the participation of artist Trung Dan, besides Ho Hong Tham and Cong Danh, the play has created an attraction for the audience, promising to attract many hearts that love drama to the small stage 5B.
What experts expect is that after this play, artist Trung Dan will stick with the stage, he will produce many plays with his own scripts. Because, the audience still likes the profound and meaningful dramatic stories of artist Trung Dan that have made an impression on many stages such as: "Tieng vac truc", "Bi mat chuyen lang Khum", "Ma oi Ut dia", "De lang", "Thang kho" ... and the comedy series "Ten vuon duoc mam".
