Mechanical engineering is currently a field with a large demand for human resources. Graduates have a starting salary of 7-12 million VND, which can be many times higher after 5 years.

According to statistics from the Center for Human Resource Demand Forecasting and Labor Market Information of Ho Chi Minh City, in the period of 2022-2026, Mechanical Engineering is still one of the four key industries, the city needs about 15,200 - 17,400 people per year. Of which, the demand for trained human resources is about 75.35%.

Priority development sectors are: mechanical molds, electrical machinery and equipment, machinery and equipment serving agricultural, forestry and fishery production and processing industry, production of household appliances, machine tools, power machines, medical instruments, optics, and watches.

In the southern region, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education are two universities with large training scales for Mechanical Engineering, enrolling about 1,000-1,200 students each year. The benchmark score for this major in the past two years at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry has fluctuated between 22-24 points; at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, it is 23-26.25 points.

Concept

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Nam, Head of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, said that mechanical engineering is a field related to the application of physical, technical and scientific principles to the process of designing, maintaining, manufacturing, servicing, controlling and automating machines and production lines in mechanical systems serving the industrial production sector.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education and Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, the Mechanical Engineering major is divided into small majors: Mechanical Engineering Technology, Machine Manufacturing Technology, Mechatronics Technology.

Particularly at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, some other majors are also related to Mechanics such as: Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Engineering, Wood and Interior Engineering.

Curriculum

During four years of study at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, students are equipped with in-depth knowledge and skills in calculation, design, establishment of manufacturing technology processes, improvement of mechanical products; ability to operate, assemble, maintain mechanical equipment and solve problems related to machinery and equipment in the production process.

Main subjects: Theoretical mechanics, strength of materials, mechanical design, machine parts, machine manufacturing technology, CAD/CAM/CNC, CNC machining technology, computer-aided mechanical design and calculation, smart factory 4.0, Mechanical materials and mechanical testing, optimization.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, Associate Professor Dr. Truong Nguyen Luan Vu, Deputy Dean in charge of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, said that students are taught specialized knowledge about materials, tolerances, product design technology, reverse engineering, mold design and CAD/CAM/CNC programming technology.

Both schools send students to do internships and training at businesses and factories to gain practical experience in their field of study.

Tuition

Tuition fees for Mechanical Engineering, a standard program at some universities, range from 18.5 to 32.5 million VND per year. Specifically as follows:

TT School Tuition/year (VND)
1 Hanoi University of Science and Technology 23,000,000-29,000,000
2 Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology 30,000,000
3 University of Transport about 10,000,000
4 Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education 29,000,000
5 Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry 32,500,000
6 Hanoi University of Industry 18,500,000

Competencies required after graduation

After four years of study, Mechanical Engineering students in general must be able to analyze and propose solutions to technical problems; read and design mechanical engineering drawings; calculate and design mechanical products; apply software in calculating and optimizing mechanical product design; establish manufacturing technology processes for mechanical machine parts; and create machining programs on CNC machines.

At the same time, students are trained in operating, assembling, and maintaining machinery and equipment; troubleshooting in industrial production systems; communication and teamwork skills; work style, discipline, self-study and research capacity.

Job position

Upon completion of the undergraduate program at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, students will receive an engineering degree. Some common job positions are mechanical engineer, mechanical engineer, production engineer, and automation engineer.

After graduating from Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, students can work as design engineers, operation engineers, maintenance engineers, and repairers of mechanical machinery and equipment at industrial corporations, production, business, and mechanical service units.

At both schools, new graduates can also become specialists in product research and development groups, technological innovation at companies, factories, and enterprises related to mechanical engineering or become design consultants, managers, and technical operators.

Income

Associate Professor, Dr. Truong Nguyen Luan Vu, said that the starting salary of students at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education upon graduation is about 12 million VND per month on average.

Students graduating from Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry can get jobs with an average salary of 7-12 million VND per month.

After 5 years, salary can reach 18-100 million VND, depending on position and work experience.
