Will drought continue to be complicated?

After several months of continuous drought, Binh Thuan has seen the first rains of the season, helping to cool down the heat. Some areas of crops such as durian, pepper and some other fruit trees of the people have also been saved in time. However, according to forecasts, the weather in May will still be very unpredictable and drought is likely to continue.

In early May, along with some southern provinces and cities, Binh Thuan experienced “golden” rains to cool down some localities. Through monitoring at rain gauge stations, the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue said that from May 2 to 5, the first rains of the season appeared in communes and towns such as Duc Phu, Duc Thuan, Gia An, Bac Ruong... (Tanh Linh), Duc Hanh, Da Kai (Duc Linh), Tan Duc (Ham Tan), Ham Tien (Phan Thiet)... This is an encouraging sign in the context of prolonged drought, causing thousands of households to be at risk of lacking domestic water and nearly 1,000 hectares of crops lacking irrigation water in the province.

According to Mr. Tran Duc Tuan in Dong Ha commune, Duc Linh district, after several months of drought, the appearance of two heavy rains last weekend made people very happy. Dozens of hectares of fruit trees and perennial trees that were lacking irrigation water were relieved by this first rain of the season. At the same time, in Tanh Linh district, the first rain of the season appeared, satisfying the expectations of people after a series of hot and dry days. At the same time, it contributed to saving some crop areas that were lacking irrigation water, but not much. Basically, thanks to the irrigation water source, water has been proactively supplied to most of the district's agricultural production areas. At the same time, many other dry areas in the province such as Tan Thang, Thang Hai (Ham Tan), Thuan Hoa (Ham Thuan Bac) ... have not had the first rain of the season. This makes the drought and lack of irrigation water for crops still ongoing, so people are very much looking forward to it.

According to experts, the impact of the El Nino phenomenon and climate change caused the severe heat wave in March and April 2024. According to weather forecasts from May to September 2024, the El Nino phenomenon will gradually weaken and turn to a neutral state. From July to September 2024, it is likely to turn to La Nina state. Along with the changes of the ENSO phenomenon, this year will be a year of natural disasters with many abnormalities. In particular, in the summer of 2024, the Central Highlands and the South from now until May 10 will not experience heat waves, from May 11 to 16, there may be a heat wave with temperatures of 35 - 38 degrees, little rain, and the lowest humidity from 55 - 65%.

The drought situation continues.

In particular, according to the forecast of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in the coming time, the average temperature tends to be higher than the average of many years. Especially in the summer, the heat wave is likely to continue to appear more frequently and more severely, with the risk of continued heat wave, drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion, especially in the Central and Southern regions (including Binh Thuan). The total rainfall in May from Da Nang to Binh Thuan provinces is 20 - 40 mm short. In addition, it is necessary to proactively guard against extreme weather phenomena such as heavy rain, tropical depressions, and storms, so localities need to regularly update weather, meteorological, and hydrological developments to have solutions, direct production, and respond promptly and effectively.

Regulate irrigation water resources to serve local production.

Regarding the implementation of measures to prevent and combat heat, drought, and water shortages that are currently complicated in the province, under the direction of the Provincial People's Committee, the agricultural sector is operating and effectively exploiting irrigation systems to coordinate water resources, best meeting the water needs of users according to the existing water resources, preventing loss and waste. Along with that, proactively dredging canals and reservoirs that have been silted up to restore and increase water storage capacity during the rainy season... In addition, facing the impact of extreme weather conditions, local authorities at all levels, departments, branches and related units of the province have implemented non-structural and structural solutions to solve water sources for production, minimizing the impact on people's lives and damage to production.
