Enhancing the position of women in politics

On March 6, speaking at the meeting - discussion with the theme "Gender equality and the role and position of women in the political field", Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho city, Head of the City's Committee for the Advancement of Women emphasized: Women are increasingly affirming their position and important role assigned by the Party, State and people, towards an equal, progressive and sustainable society. The event was organized by the Committee for the Advancement of Women of Can Tho city to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8.

Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien said that in recent times, social awareness of gender equality, the position and role of women have been raised, men are increasingly interested in sharing housework, creating conditions for women to participate more in social work. Departments, branches, organizations, units and localities throughout the city have proactively integrated into the professional activities of the sector and field in charge of implementing programs and plans on gender equality and for the advancement of women.

Integrating gender equality into the city's socio-economic development plan creates interest and positive changes, contributing to the orientation of gender equality and the advancement of women. Thereby positively affecting many different subjects in the community and society.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, in recent times, many female cadres, civil servants and public employees have been trusted and promoted to important positions in state agencies in the city. In the 2021-2026 term, the proportion of female leaders in agencies under the provincial People's Committee accounts for 16.47%; at the district level, 24.62%; and at the commune level, 48.19%. However, overall, the proportion of female leaders is still modest.

At the meeting, Can Tho city leaders requested the Committee for the Advancement of Women at all levels, relevant agencies and departments to continue promoting propaganda, dissemination and effective implementation of the Law on Gender Equality to eliminate existing gender prejudices that affect women's opportunities to study, improve their qualifications, professional expertise and progress in their work.

In addition, regularly survey the situation of female leaders and managers in agencies, units and localities to detect cadres with capacity and development prospects; propose timely advice to supplement the training and development planning, and arrange, use and rotate female cadres at all levels to achieve the prescribed ratio. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen communication and education to raise awareness to help women overcome difficulties and barriers, strive to study, improve professional qualifications, and meet the tasks and requirements of the job.
