The difficult problem of finding a coach for Nguyen Thuy Linh

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên15/10/2023

This tennis player born in 1997 is in the golden period of her career when she has made steady progress in the world rankings (currently ranked 26th), qualifying to participate in most prestigious international badminton tournaments. Coaches assess that Thuy Linh's current level is not inferior to that of tennis players in the world's top 20. In fact, in recent tournaments, she has continuously defeated strong opponents such as Mariska Tunjung (Indonesia, ranked 7th in the world), Zhang Beiwen (USA, ranked 10th in the world), Zhang Yi Man (China, ranked 15th in the world). In the quarterfinals of the Finnish Open yesterday, the tennis player from Phu Tho also had the opportunity to defeat former world champion Pusarla Sindhu (India, ranked 13th in the world), but regretfully missed it.

Nguyen Thuy Linh needs a coach to be more successful.

What makes experts and fans sad is that Nguyen Tien Minh in the past and now Nguyen Thuy Linh have to often compete internationally alone without a coach. The image of Linh having to take care of herself, alone during breaks between matches, while her opponents always have at least one coach on the field to provide professional support such as analyzing the opponent's weaknesses and the next match strategy. Having a coach with her also helps to motivate the players' fighting spirit, helping them overcome difficult times.

Due to financial constraints, the Department of Sports and Physical Training as well as the Vietnam Badminton Federation have not been able to arrange a private expert or coach for Nguyen Thuy Linh. The cost of having a private expert or coach to accompany her in international tournaments is up to nearly 10,000 USD/month. To solve this problem, we cannot rely solely on the state budget but must promote the role of the Vietnam Badminton Federation or, at a lower level, the Dong Nai Badminton Federation, where Nguyen Thuy Linh is currently playing. There were some important periods in the past, when former Vietnam No. 1 Nguyen Tien Minh also had foreign experts thanks to socialized resources from the Ho Chi Minh City Badminton Federation as well as special talent support policies from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

With her recent successes, Nguyen Thuy Linh has enough personal sponsors to support her career, but to fully develop her potential, she needs to find a quality expert or coach soon. Not to mention, she also needs to be cared for in terms of nutrition and recovery to ensure her physical strength to compete in international tournaments continuously and avoid injuries. Nguyen Thuy Linh herself also said that this is an important stage in her career, deciding the success or failure of her path to pursuing professional badminton because she is no longer young.

After stopping in the quarterfinals of the Finnish Open, Thuy Linh will continue to compete in major international badminton tournaments in Denmark, France, Korea, and China to realize her goal of winning a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
