On October 7, Hanoi Medical University Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just treated a young man (born in 2003) who suffered serious injuries to his penis due to self-mutilation.
Doctor Do Ich Dinh, Department of Andrology and Gender Medicine, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, said that this young man was brought to the emergency room with bleeding in the penis area. Preliminary examination showed many wounds crisscrossing the penis area, especially a large area of skin peeling off, which was bleeding. Through investigation, the patient's family said that the above injury was caused by the patient using scissors to cut off his penis.
After further investigation, the doctors learned that the patient was the second child in the family, had been slow to develop since childhood and was still taking sedatives. This young man also often had self-harming behaviors, but this was the first time he had used scissors to cut off his own "private parts".
Doctors perform penis preservation surgery for young man |
After receiving emergency care, doctors performed surgery to treat the wound and preserve the patient's penis.
According to doctors, suicidal or self-harming behavior in schizophrenic patients is explained by delusions and hallucinations. In the stable phase, patients may have comorbid depression and negative thoughts leading to suicidal thoughts and behavior. In the above patient, through clinical assessment, it was discovered that the patient's self-mutilation behavior was due to auditory hallucinations. At the same time, medication management was not closely monitored by family members.
Therefore, patients with a history of mental illness need to be monitored and paid attention to in daily activities to ensure safety for themselves and those around them.
