"Construction of the future aircraft carriers USS William J. Clinton (CVN 82) and USS George W. Bush (CVN 83) will begin in the coming years," AFP quoted President Joe Biden's statement a week before Donald Trump returned to the White House.

“Once completed, the two ships will join the most capable, flexible and professional navy in the world,” Biden said.

The US has a tradition of naming some of its aircraft carriers after former presidents.

The most recent ships named after former presidents are USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79).

Bill Clinton, who never served in the military, was president of the United States for two terms from 1993 to 2001. This was a period that saw American planes bombing Iraq and Yugoslavia, as well as the Black Hawk Down battle by American special forces in Somalia.

Mr. George W. Bush (Bush Jr.), a former Air Force pilot in the National Guard, was also president for two terms from 2001 to 2009.

Bush's term was defined by the "War on Terror" following the events of September 11, 2001. Bush launched a global military effort that included protracted wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that killed tens of thousands of people.

CVN 82 and CVN 83 will complete the program of six Ford-class aircraft carriers for the US Navy. The first, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), was commissioned in 2017. USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) is expected to be delivered later this year, and USS Enterprise (CVN 80) and USS Doris Miller (CVN 81) will join the fleet.
