The new restrictions come in addition to sanctions already imposed by the US Department of Justice against Russian media outlets accused of trying to influence the US presidential election, the US Treasury Department announced on September 4.
Among the Russian citizens sanctioned this time are Ms. Margarita Simonyan, Editor-in-Chief of Rossiya Segodnya , and her deputies Ms. Elizaveta Brodskaya and Mr. Anton Anisimov.
The assets of these individuals and corporations in the United States are frozen. In addition, they are prohibited from conducting banking and other transactions, as well as visa restrictions.
Responding to this move, on September 5, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova voiced her opposition and declared that Moscow would respond to Washington's actions.
Meanwhile, TASS news agency quoted Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov commenting on the Telegram channel that Russia "has never interfered in Washington's internal affairs and has no intention of doing so in the future."
"We have always respected and will always respect the choice of the American people, whatever it is... We completely reject the false accusations against the Russian media and demand the lifting of administrative restrictions imposed on the work of our journalists in the United States," the diplomat said.
According to Mr. Antonov, the Russian side has never equated "the wise people of America" with the government in Washington.
The Russian ambassador accused: "The local authorities are doing everything possible not only to tear apart the Russian-American relationship, but also to completely destroy the foundations of this relationship. Such a policy poses a threat to the goal of maintaining global peace and stability."
