The US Secretary of Defense, during a meeting with President Marcos Jr. in Manila on March 28, emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense and security, and affirmed the determination to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Secretary Hegseth reaffirmed the United States' "ironclad commitment" to the Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines, emphasizing the power of deterrence in maintaining regional peace and stability.
The Philippine News Agency quoted President Marcos' statement at the meeting with Minister Hegseth admitting that the US is the "biggest force" in maintaining peace in the Indo-Pacific region, especially in the East Sea.
The leader emphasized: “The decision to choose the Philippines as your first stop is a very clear expression and sends a very strong message about the commitment of both our countries to continue to cooperate to maintain peace in the Indo-Pacific region, especially in the East Sea.”
According to him, Manila “has always understood the principle that the greatest force serving peace in this region will be the United States.”
In addition, President Marcos also expressed confidence that the US Secretary of Defense's visit to the Philippines will be "extremely productive", outlining a roadmap for the future and common prosperity of the two countries, despite the "complicated" geopolitical situation in the region.
Host country Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro, in a meeting with Mr. Hegseth afterwards, expressed gratitude for the long-standing support of the US treaty ally, and affirmed the commitment to cooperate with allies and partners to re-establish deterrence capabilities in the region against threats.
Minister Teodoro highlighted the need to be ready to respond, confront and deter any future threats for the common defense and protection of international law.
The Philippines is Mr. Hegseth's first stop on his maiden trip to Asia since taking office as the US defense chief.
The trip takes place in the context of the US administration under President Donald Trump continuing to strengthen relations with allies in the Asia-Pacific region.
Mr. Hegseth's next stop is scheduled to be Japan.
The meeting between the US and Philippine defense ministers in Manila comes amid tensions between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea. On February 4 this year, the Philippine and US air forces conducted joint patrols and air intercept training in the South China Sea, angering China.
Just before Mr. Hegseth's visit, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said military cooperation between the United States and the Philippines must not harm the security interests of other countries.
"History has shown that the US has an incredible track record of breaking promises and turning its back on its allies," Mr. Wu said at a press conference in Beijing on March 27.
