According to Ciber Cuba , the US Embassy said the appointment reinforces Washington's commitment to improving bilateral relations, especially in important areas of mutual concern such as security and people's well-being.
Mr. Mike Hammer, 60 years old, is a 35-year career diplomat, fluent in Spanish, French and Icelandic, who served as Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa as well as US Ambassador to Chile (2014-2016) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (2018-2022).
Mr. Hammer has also worked in Bolivia, Norway, Iceland and Denmark.
The United States has not had an Ambassador to Cuba since 1960. Although diplomatic relations were restored in 2015 by former President Barack Obama and former Cuban President Raúl Castro, the head of the Mission is the charge d'affaires ad interim.
