During the funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at Thong Nhat Hall, Ho Chi Minh City this morning, many touching stories were recorded, expressing the great affection of the people of the South for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

That is the story of Le Tran Hai Long (12 years old) who went to Thong Nhat Hall alone to pay his respects to the leader he saw on TV every day. Long said that when he heard that the funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was taking place in Ho Chi Minh City, he convinced his mother to take him there.

Long's house is in Binh Tan, 17km from Thong Nhat Hall. Ms. Tran Thi Doan (Long's mother) took her son there at 6am. When they arrived, Ms. Doan let Long go to the hall by himself while she went to work. With a black shirt borrowed from his grandfather, Long scanned the VNeID code and went alone to the waiting room to wait his turn to visit.

Long said that through the press, he saw the great contributions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in building the Party and developing the country. In the past few days, Long researched the location of the funeral, the dress code, and then convinced his mother to take him to the Reunification Hall.

“I wanted to visit General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. I had a black shirt with a rainbow on it that didn’t fit me very well, so this morning I ran to my grandfather’s room to borrow his shirt to wear,” Long shared.

Ms. Doan said that during the summer vacation, Long went to the city library every day to find books on Vietnamese history to read. Long loves history and admires Vietnam's leaders.

When I wanted to go alone to the General Secretary's funeral, even though I was very worried, she still supported me to go, which also gave me the opportunity to feel and cultivate moral thoughts.

The story of a nearly 80-year-old veteran couple taking the bus to visit General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also touched many people.

From District 12, Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Nguyen Tong Don (79 years old) and his wife, Mrs. Tran Thi Lien (75 years old) woke up early, took the bus to Thong Nhat Hall with the wish to burn incense and pay respect to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Ms. Lien was a female youth volunteer, and Mr. Don was a veteran who participated in the Quang Tri battlefield, the Southeast battlefield, Ha Giang... Mr. Don was also one of the soldiers who joined the army that entered the Independence Palace (now the Reunification Hall) on April 30, 1975.

Quickly wiping away her tears of emotion, Ms. Lien said that she and her husband had never met the General Secretary, only seen him on the news, but still loved and respected him very much.

When hearing the news of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s death, “my hands and feet trembled and I felt very sad.” Despite her old age and her husband’s health problems from the war, both of them were determined to attend the funeral.

“My uncle often told his children and grandchildren to learn from Uncle Trong’s example of simplicity. He even often wore old, worn-out shirts in a small, ordinary house.

My husband and I retired and saved up some money to buy a small apartment. We thought we were poor, but seeing his simplicity, our poverty was nothing," Ms. Lien said emotionally.

Wearing a veteran's green shirt, having spent half his life on the battlefield, Mr. Don still believes that his contributions are nothing compared to the leadership of the Party and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

“My family currently has 3 children and 5 young grandchildren. The young children do not know or ask what Uncle Trong does, where he is, or why his grandparents are sad. I just told him that Uncle Trong is a great leader, he is respected by the Vietnamese people and the world, when he passed away everyone mourned him. The children in the future must learn and follow his example,” Mr. Don shared.

“The voice of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is still with us”

Holding in his hand the book Resolutely and persistently fighting against corruption and negativity, contributing to building our Party and State increasingly clean and strong by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Associate Professor Dr. Ha Minh Hong - lecturer at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University - said that wherever he goes, he carries the General Secretary's book with him as a handbook to remind himself.

According to Mr. Hong, this is just one of more than 40 works that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong left for the entire Party and people, and the works all talk about human destiny, human development, and feelings between people.

“The voice of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong still accompanies us and is not far away,” said Mr. Hong.

Associate Professor Dr. Ha Minh Hong recognized that more than 40 works clearly demonstrated the "speaking and doing" style of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

First of all, be aware, be aware then speak, speak then do, not just talk.

The works of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong are also cultural heritages, creating trust among the people. And it is the trust of the people that reflects the integrity of the leaders.

"Indeed, the staff needs to be honest, only integrity can create influence and only then can we be close to the people," said Mr. Hong.

Colonel Vo Ha Do emotionally said that during his lifetime, the General Secretary visited Ca Mau twice.

No matter what position he holds, the leader is always simple, close to the people, always listens to the people's thoughts and aspirations and then makes decisions to create breakthroughs for the land.

“I will forever remember the image and merit of the General Secretary in my heart. Today I cannot go to Hanoi to pay my respects, so I will sit with my comrades and watch TV and remember him,” said Mr. Do.

“Since hearing the news that the General Secretary was seriously ill and had passed away, I have not been able to sleep. It is a great loss for the entire Party, the entire people, and the entire army.

“These past few days, I have been searching the media to review memories of the General Secretary. Today, my comrades and I came here to bid him farewell,” said Dang Van Khoi, chairman of the Ca Mau City Veterans Association.

Mr. Tran Hop Nhi - Chairman of the Veterans Association of Ward 9, Ca Mau City - said: "I admire him for being a person who fought corruption and negativity to the end, working until his last breath. It is so sad to see a great personality who devoted his whole life to the country and the people."
