Mr. Le Dinh Quyet - Head of the Southern Hydrometeorological Station said that the heat wave is still ongoing, lasting continuously from February 9 until now in Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast provinces.

"In April, widespread heat waves spread to the western provinces. This is the longest heat wave ever. If the highest air temperature is 35 degrees Celsius for 2 consecutive days or more, it is called a heat wave," said Mr. Quyet.

In Bien Hoa (Dong Nai) on February 15, the temperature reached 38 degrees Celsius, in March in the Southeast region, it reached over 37-38 degrees Celsius for many days. From the beginning of April until now, in Bien Hoa (April 9), Dong Phu (April 16), the temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius, in So Sao (April 16), it also reached 39.9 degrees Celsius.

According to Mr. Quyet, this is the highest temperature since the beginning of the year, especially Bien Hoa and So Sao. Compared to 2023 and the same period in other years, this year the heat is longer, the sun is stronger, and the temperature is higher. In Ho Chi Minh City, the highest air temperature since the beginning of the year also reached 38 degrees Celsius.

"In the coming time, there will still be little rain, leading to drought and water shortages. People in the Mekong Delta need to have appropriate farming measures, prevent drought and saltwater intrusion; fertilize and harvest properly. When the heat lasts for a long time, there is little rain, evaporation increases sharply, causing water in canals to dry up, increasing the risk of land subsidence. The salinity situation from now until the end of April will continue, when planting the summer-autumn rice crop in 2024, there must be appropriate irrigation and fertilization solutions," Mr. Quyet recommended.

Salinity leads to lack of domestic water in the provinces: Tien Giang, Long An, Ben Tre...

In addition, people need to closely follow forecast and warning information, comply with instructions and regulations of local authorities to prevent and minimize damage caused by drought and saltwater intrusion; and be on guard against fires, explosions, electrical short circuits, and forest fires.

"In late April and early May, there may be occasional rains, the rain comes quickly, often accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, so be careful to avoid them. Do not use water from these unseasonal rains for daily activities, because rainwater still contains many pollutants in the air. It is forecasted that this year's rainy season may come later than the average of many years. The first days of May will be the transition period, from the second half of May, the South will generally enter the rainy season," said Mr. Quyet.

In the coming days, the hot low pressure area in the West will continue to develop and expand to the Southeast; the low trough with an axis through the North connecting with the hot low pressure area in the West will be active. Above, the subtropical high pressure area over the South Central region will weaken slightly, and the easterly wind disturbance will tend to develop better.

The weather in the South in the coming days will be cloudy, with thunderstorms in some places in the late afternoon and evening. Beware of thunder, strong winds and tornadoes. Widespread heat in the region, with some places in the East experiencing severe heat, with the intensity of the heat decreasing slightly.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on April 18, the area from Thua Thien Hue to Phu Yen, the Central Highlands and the South will have hot weather, some places will be extremely hot. The temperature at 1 p.m. is generally from 35-36 degrees Celsius, some places are over 37 degrees Celsius such as: Ba To (Quang Ngai) 38.5 degrees, Son Hoa (Phu Yen) 37.8 degrees... the lowest relative humidity is commonly 45-50%.

In the next 24-48 hours, the Southern region will have hot weather, some places will have severe heat with the highest temperature commonly ranging from 35-37 degrees Celsius, some places above 37 degrees Celsius; the lowest relative humidity commonly ranges from 45-50%.
