Russia-Ukraine War Today, May 9, 2024: Ukrainian Army is in a "threatening" state; Russia attacks across the front Russia-Ukraine War May 10, 2024: Ukraine's "strategic fortress" is in danger; Poland acknowledges the presence of NATO troops |
Speaking to The Economist, a field commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) admitted that the Russian Army is making strong advances on the front, the possibility that Moscow is about to launch a full-scale attack, and the possibility of the current defense line collapsing.

This AFU officer stated that without receiving new aid packages, Ukraine will find it difficult to control the situation.
Sharing this opinion, Commander of the 92nd AFU Regiment, Colonel Pavel Fedosenko noted that the serious danger of the Russian Army taking complete control of the Donbass region is becoming increasingly evident.
“I estimate that up to 70% of the Russian army will control the Donbass region,” said Colonel Pavel Fedosenko.
The commander of the 92nd AFU Regiment believes that it is only a matter of time and how much damage Russia is willing to accept to achieve its tactical goal of complete control over the Donbass region. He believes that the town of Druzhkovka, Donetsk region, will be Russia's next priority target.
Earlier, the Commander-in-Chief of the AFU, General Alexander Syrsky, spoke about the difficult situation for the Ukrainian army near the settlements of Krasnoarmeysk and Kurakhovo. The Russian army is constantly attacking the positions of the Ukrainian army with a clear advantage in terms of numbers, weapons and military equipment.
Colonel Pavel Fedosenko assessed that the current important issue for Ukraine is no longer territorial integrity, but the survival of the Kiev government. Stopping the advance of the Russian Army must be the top priority.
“Everyone knows that if we do not fight for Konstantinovka and Druzhkovka, the Russian army can be in the Dnieper, Kharkov and Krivoy Rog in a few weeks,” Colonel Pavel Fedosenko stressed.
The AFU's main objective was not the ongoing battles around Chasov Yar, but trying to stop the Russian Army's advance towards Kharkov, Dnieper, Odessa and Kiev.
A year ago, when Ukraine was preparing for a strategic counteroffensive, holding on to the territories in Donbass was not a priority. However, The Economist assessed that the most important goal of the AFU now is to try not to lose control of other territories.
On this issue, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Timchenko, Commander of an AFU air defense unit, said that Ukraine does not have enough resources to return to the 1991 borders as politicians always claim in Kiev.
“I suggest that all those who say they want to return to the 1991 borders should go to the town of Bakhmut,” said Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Timchenko.
Meanwhile, AFU's remaining resources are very limited, despite the approval of a new US aid package worth $61 billion for Ukraine.
Colonel Pavel Fedosenko said his unit had no more than five shells left per day for the US Paladin self-propelled guns.

“What should I do with such ammunition? My soldiers fight with shovels in the trenches,” said Colonel Pavel Fedosenko.
The Economist assessed that although the AFU was not on the verge of collapse, there was essentially little resistance. The Russian army was advancing an average of 20 square kilometers per week.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky said that the AFU will be able to repel the Russian offensive after receiving new shipments of Western weapons. The Ukrainian leader's statement contrasts with the Russian Army's full strategic initiative on the front.
“We need to stop the enemy and take the initiative on the battlefield. This can only be done when we have something powerful in our hands. As soon as the supplies of weapons arrive, we will stop the enemy’s activities on the Eastern front,” Volodymir Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian leader also noted that Western countries were providing weapons to Kiev too slowly and in insufficient quantities. On May 7, the Ukrainian President continued to call on the West to speed up the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
A notable political move in Ukraine has just taken place: the President of Ukraine has signed a decision to discharge General Valery Zaluzhny from the army. According to Russia's TASS news agency, this means that Mr. Valery Zaluzhny is no longer involved in the activities of the AFU.
General Valery Zaluzhny served as commander-in-chief of the AFU from 2021 to 2024 and was removed from office due to health reasons. He was later appointed by Kiev to serve as Ukraine's ambassador to the UK.
The media has been writing a lot about the upcoming changes in the AFU leadership. General Zaluzhny’s resignation is linked to the failures of the Ukrainian army on the front since the beginning of 2023, including the strategic counteroffensive in the summer of the same year.
