Since they were still carried on their backs, the Van Kieu people in Dakrong commune, Dakrong district have seen their grandparents and parents diligently making brooms. Worried about the traditional craft being gradually forgotten, a group of disabled people in the locality have come together to find ways to preserve and maintain it. Not letting people down, the broom making profession has opened up a new direction for them, with much joy.

At 6am, when the sky and earth were still covered in morning mist, the atmosphere at the Ka Lu village community house was bustling. From all over the villages and hamlets in Dakrong commune, the number of vehicles carrying disabled people to work was increasing. Each person brought with them knives, machetes, reeds, rattan... Most of the people who came to the community house to work were physically disabled. Despite having difficulty moving around and carrying a lot of belongings, everyone was smiling. That was the joy of those who had long since found a suitable job.
The leader of the broom-making group of disabled people, Ho E Not, is often the last to arrive. However, no one is bothered by this. The group members all know that on the scheduled working day, Not must drive his motorbike to many villages to pick up disabled people who have no one to pick them up or lack transportation.
Some days, Mr. Not has to pick up 2 or 3 people. Having broken both legs after a traffic accident, Mr. Ho E Not has a lot of difficulty moving around. However, compared to the members of the group, he is still one of the healthiest. Therefore, Mr. Not always considers helping other members as his duty and joy.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Ho E Not said that the group of people with disabilities making brooms in Dakrong commune was established on May 19, 2023, on the occasion of the 113th anniversary of Uncle Ho's birthday. Previously, with the support of the Plan Project, dozens of people with disabilities in the commune were given the opportunity to learn the profession of making brooms.
To open this class, commune and project officials went to each village to conduct field surveys and understand the thoughts and aspirations of the disabled. When asked what they wanted to learn, Ho E Not and most of the disabled immediately mentioned the broom making profession. For a long time, they have been concerned about the decline of their ancestors' traditional profession.
After vocational training, most of the students unanimously established a group of people with disabilities to produce brooms in Dakrong commune. Ho E Not was elected as the group leader by everyone. According to Not, each member of the group has their own circumstances, personality, and suffering. They meet in common that they are not fortunate enough to be healthy and whole. Therefore, everyone can easily sympathize, share with each other and always uphold the spirit of teamwork.
After being established, the group members soon agreed to build operating regulations; working time and location; build a common fund... "The broom making profession is quite suitable for people with disabilities. Every month, we work 4 days, every Monday so that everyone can learn and support each other. During the production process, each person is responsible for a suitable stage", said Mr. Not.
The profession does not disappoint the people.
Among the group of people with disabilities who produce brooms in Dakrong commune, Mr. Ho Van Nuoi is one of the members with the most difficult circumstances. Mr. Nuoi has been disabled in his right leg for a long time. For many years, his wife has shared the family burden with him. However, recently, Mr. Nuoi's wife was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, the difficulties in his family's life have doubled.
Faced with this situation, Mr. Nuoi wanted to do something to help his family, but his age and health did not allow it. While his heart was in turmoil, Mr. Nuoi was very happy to receive vocational training and become a member of the group of people with disabilities who produce brooms in Dakrong commune. From then on, his life had a new hope.
Thanks to his hard work making brooms, Mr. Nuoi has a stable income to support his family and take care of his sick wife. Especially since joining the production group, his spirit has been revived. Mr. Nuoi is happy to get to know and work with people in the same situation and has the opportunity to contribute to bringing the traditional products of the Van Kieu people far and wide.
Not only Mr. Nuoi, since joining the group and participating in broom production, the disabled people in Dakrong commune seem to have found a new direction for their lives. Therefore, everyone is enthusiastic, diligent in working and producing. Not only do they work hard, they also bring tools and materials home to make to fill their free time.
However, everyone agrees on a common point of view that we must work together in the most important stages. At this point, the role of highly skilled people will be promoted. Not only to make the most beautiful products, they can also guide and instruct others so that all members' skills can improve. That is the reason why the products made by the hands of group members are increasingly durable and beautiful, and are trusted by many customers.
Talking to reporters, Ms. Hoang Van Trinh, a cultural officer of Dakrong commune, who is also in charge of the group of people with disabilities who produce brooms, happily said that currently, the products made by the group have reached many provinces and cities in the country. More and more old customers are returning to choose the group's products and recommend them to relatives and friends. Some units and schools have also placed orders with the group to provide products every year.
“However, besides the encouraging signs, the group of people with disabilities producing brooms in Dakrong commune and each member still face many difficulties. We hope to receive attention and sharing from organizations, projects, customers near and far and kind hearts,” said Ms. Trinh.
