Meta (Facebook's parent company) is planning to fire about 3,600 underperforming employees and hire new ones to replace them.
Information about Meta's plan to lay off a large number of underperforming employees was published by Bloomberg on January 14 based on an internal memo of the corporation.
Meta confirmed the plan and said CEO Mark Zuckerberg's decision would affect 5% of the group's workforce, AFP reported. Meta is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. As of September 2024, Meta had about 72,400 employees.

“I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and remove poor performers more quickly,” Mr. Zuckerberg said.
The leader said the performance-based cuts were aimed at ensuring the company had the "strongest talent" and could "attract new people to work".
Performance-based layoffs are common among large U.S. corporations. Last week, Microsoft announced similar layoffs, affecting less than 1% of its workforce, Business Insider reported.
The layoffs come amid more major changes at Meta ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House on January 20.
Mr. Zuckerberg recently dined with Mr. Trump and nominated a Republican to head Meta’s public relations department.
Last week, billionaire Mark Zuckerberg announced the end of Facebook’s fact-checking program after it was criticized by conservatives as censorship. Under the new system, users will be able to add context to posts, similar to features on Elon Musk’s social network X.
Meta has also scaled back diversity initiatives and loosened content moderation rules on Facebook and Instagram, particularly for certain forms of hate speech.
