At the end of the match Topenland Binh Dinh won Hanoi FC 3-1 in round 7 of V-League 2023, striker Van Quyet of the away team received a red card for attacking assistant referee Nguyen Le Nguyen Thanh.
According to the match supervisor's report and the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Referee Board, Van Quyet "interfered" with assistant Nguyen Le Nguyen Thanh, and as everyone witnessed on the field, the Hanoi FC captain elbowed referee Nguyen Le Nguyen Thanh. After the match, Van Quyet still cried out for injustice, thinking the referee had given a red card to punish another player: "I don't know why the referee gave me a red card. When I saw the red card, I told referee Nguyen Manh Hai that if I thought I was reacting to the referee, I should have given him a yellow card, why a red card? The referee didn't answer. After that, everyone left the field."
However, the Hanoi FC captain later admitted his mistake and was let off by referee Nguyen Le Nguyen Thanh after Van Quyet called to apologize.
After careful consideration, the VFF Disciplinary Board decided to severely punish Van Quyet; specifically, the Hanoi FC captain was suspended for 8 matches and fined 40 million VND. With a long-term suspension, Van Quyet can only return in phase 2 of the 2023 V-League.
The point here is Van Quyet's uncivilized behavior, which is not in accordance with the standards. He is the captain of Hanoi FC, the owner of the 2022 Golden Ball, and has a great influence on young players. Hanoi FC has long been a force in the V-League. They do not have the habit of losing matches. The team also wants to build a good image, to aim for long-term goals and strategies. However, Van Quyet's elbow on the referee at Quy Nhon Stadium left many scars.
This is not the first time Van Quyet has acted aggressively towards a referee. In the 2016 V-League season, Van Quyet pushed referee Hoang Pham Cong Khanh to the ground at Nha Trang Stadium. For this action, he was banned from playing 5 matches and was not called up to the national team at that time. After receiving the penalty for pushing referee Hoang Pham Cong Khanh, Van Quyet once expressed: “I originally did not act badly towards anyone, but just because of a momentary impulse, I overreacted to the referee. I see those as valuable lessons throughout my life and will commit to never doing it again. As a professional player, you should not react to the referee's decisions. I was wrong. I would like to express my regret and send my most sincere apology to referee Cong Khanh.”
7 years later, it was Van Quyet's apology to another referee.

After Van Quyet won the 2022 Vietnam Golden Ball (QBV) title in the men's category, public opinion was divided. Many people said that Van Quyet played well at Hanoi FC, but contributed little to the national team; meanwhile, Tien Linh played excellently for the national team but only won the Silver Ball.
