According to Mr. Dien, the launch of the Southwestern Pediatric Association is extremely important, because the 13 provinces and cities in this region have about 18 million people, of which the pediatric population is about 4.5 million. Meanwhile, the network of pediatric doctors and hospitals is still too small.
Currently, the Mekong Delta region only has Can Tho Children's Hospital, 6 maternity and pediatric hospitals and a number of pediatric departments in provincial and district general hospitals.
Regarding the pediatric specialist force, it is still very limited. According to statistics, the whole region has about 1,000 specialists, a very limited number compared to the demand for health care and the development of specialized pediatric treatment techniques for children in the Southwest region.
“At the same time, the current disease pattern in children is very diverse, with increasingly complex changes. Non-communicable diseases still exist and especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, non-communicable diseases in children are on the rise (cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer, lung...) similar to the pattern in developed countries.
This is a big challenge for the team of pediatricians in the region - where there is a lack of technical facilities and specialized human resources," said Mr. Dien.
The newly launched Mekong Delta Pediatric Association elected an executive committee of 25 members who are doctors and nurses working at hospitals and schools with pediatric specialties.
The association will be responsible for connecting domestic and international experts to share experiences, helping members update and improve specialized knowledge in pediatrics; managing pediatric patient models in the region...
At this pediatric conference, many reports on actual treatment at hospitals showed that the disease pattern of children in the region is typically a group of seasonal infectious diseases, such as: Dengue fever, hand, foot and mouth disease, gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory diseases, etc.
In addition, some topics also focus on evaluating the actual treatment and surgery of some difficult diseases in children such as congenital heart disease, continuous blood filtration to treat sepsis, resuscitation techniques, and intensive treatment for premature infants... at specialized pediatric hospitals in the region.
After the launching ceremony of the Mekong Delta Pediatric Association, the executive board of the association said that in the near future, it will strengthen cooperation with other associations, pediatric hospitals and leading pediatric experts nationwide and internationally to improve professional capacity in treating diseases for children in the Southwest region.
