Ho Chi Minh City: Dengue fever epidemic forecasted to come earlier than usual
Given this year's erratic weather, the health sector and the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City predict that dengue fever may increase earlier than usual.
Prevent the epidemic early
At a press conference providing information on the socio-economic situation in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Le Hong Nga, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) informed that from the end of 2024 until now, HCDC recorded that the number of dengue fever cases is still higher than the average of the same period in previous years.
Of which, since the beginning of 2025, Ho Chi Minh City has recorded 3,800 cases of dengue fever, 2.2 times higher than the same period in 2024 and an increase of 45% compared to the average of the period 2021-2022.
Also since the beginning of the year, Ho Chi Minh City has recorded an average of more than 400 cases of dengue fever each week. Along with forecasts that the weather may be erratic this year, the health sector and the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City predict that dengue fever may increase earlier than usual.

Therefore, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has issued a document directing HCDC and units, medical centers, and hospitals across the city to urgently deploy activities to prevent and control dengue fever from the beginning of March.
“We do not wait for dengue fever to break out, but proactively prevent and control it from the beginning. Units will strictly control high-risk areas to thoroughly handle and limit the risk of outbreaks. Hospitals also need to proactively prepare drugs and chemicals to be ready for situations and handle outbreaks if they occur,” Ms. Nga emphasized.
In addition, regarding the measles epidemic, the Deputy Director of HCDC said that after more than three years without measles cases, Ho Chi Minh City recorded its first measles case at the end of May 2024. Since then, the number of cases has increased and the city announced a measles epidemic in August 2024.
Since the beginning of 2025, the number of weekly cases has remained high, at around 200-300 cases/week. Therefore, medical facilities must continue to maintain measures to prevent measles. In particular, measles vaccination for children must be carried out according to schedule.
Ho Chi Minh City has not recorded any severe flu cases.
Regarding the seasonal flu situation in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Nga informed that according to the monitoring system of the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City and HCDC, every year, the city has flu cases, especially during the period from October to December, which increases.
However, Ho Chi Minh City has not recorded any severe flu cases. Given the flu situation in some countries, the surveillance system is still maintained. At the same time, the Department of Health has also issued a document directing medical facilities in the area to strengthen the work of preventing and fighting the flu epidemic.
HCDC representatives recommend that people proactively take measures to prevent and fight influenza for themselves and their families, such as covering their mouths, lifting their noses, coughing when sneezing, and washing their hands frequently with soap and water. In case of respiratory symptoms, people should wear masks and limit contact with others, especially those in high-risk groups.
The health sector also recommends flu vaccination for people in risk groups, including children under 5 years old, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with underlying medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc. In addition, people need to get the flu vaccine every year.
